Swim
Comments: At one point I was swimming in the lake and it became kind of surreal. I was thinking to myself, "Should I be nervous that I'm out in the middle of a lake?" Then I thought, "Nope, just keep swimming!" And I did. And came out of the water WAAAAAAAY quicker than expected. What an awesome swim! I was thrilled. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: About a mile or so into my ride, I looked down and my back tire was all wobbly. So I stopped to make sure it was tight enough. It was. I then stopped again a mile or so later, because I was a bit nervous about it. Then I just thought, "Heck, just go for it. If you get bucked from your bike, so be it!" I ended up having a great ride. Very fun! Transition 2
Comments: It was fun seeing the crowd and my wife waiting for me at transition. Run
Comments: Oh boy, that was a rough one. I got about a mile into the run and thought the half-way point was going to be there anytime. It wasn't. So I just kept slowly plugging away as people passed me up. Ugh. But at least it was a flat course. Post race
Event comments: What an awesome race! I couldn't stop smiling as I approached the straight-away to the finish line. How awesome! They really throw a party for this race. Fun stuff. I really enjoyed the open-water swim, probably even better than the pool swims. All in all, a great day. Last updated: 2008-04-18 12:00 AM

Sleep definitely wasn't in this equation. Worked late and then woke up at about 4:15 after hitting the hay at 12:30. Not smart.
So, we hurried and got ready ... my wife's grandma came over (bless her heart) to watch the kids at 4:30 a.m. and then we headed out the door for the hour drive to my first lake triathlon. Once there at just after 6, the participants had to ride about 1.5 miles to get to the race, so that served as a nice, chilly wake-up call since it was quite brisk. Four buck deer hopped across the road in front of me, so that was pretty cool.
I was too busy worrying about my first open-water swim, getting registered and marked up, and searching down safety pins for my bib number to worry about warming up. I did meet a cool guy who lives in my town and runs by my house on what I call "Mount St. Hell!" No wonder he's in shape.
