Pre-race routine:

Got to sleep in a little bit this morning as my wife got up with the little guy - I think that extra 1/2 hour was beneficial. Didn't have much appetite for breakfast but I forced down some eggs and toast and then started to get my stuff together. The race wasn't till 1pm so I decided not to nother the night before.

Got out of the house in good time, made to the race site 1 1/2 hours pre race, so I got a decent spot that was near a tree - nice for knowing where my bike was parked in transition. Looked like it was going to pour on us, and did rain on the drive, but it cleared up and the weather was perfect.
Event warmup:

Ran a short km about 45 minutes before race time, then rearranged my transition area. With about 20 minutes to go I suited up and swam a little bit. The water was still ab it cold, but nothing like the race 3 weeks ago. I was in the second wave, so I watched the first wave go, then lined up for my turn.

Comments:

I'm not sure how I managed to do it, but I found myself lined up near the front, just back 1 row. When the horn went off, I just got going and found myself in a mess of hands and feet. It wasn't too bad, and if someone was jostling me I tended to move over a bit and give up some room.

I found a few feet to try and draft off, but spent most of my time trying to concentrate on sighting. I had forgotten to put some more baby shampoo in the googles, so they did start to fog on me, but I was with the main group so I had a pretty good idea where I was going.

What completely blew me away was that I started to catch the slow people in the first wave early on - and then caught even more of them later. This gave me some added confidence, but also led to a kick in the midsection by someone who was doing breastroke. I think the best part of the swim was I don't believe I got caught by anyone in the next wave - big difference from the first race. My time was faster than the first race + we had a long run from the beach to the timing mat.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure the goggles were setup ahead of time to try avoiding the fogging, but otherwise I was happy with the swim. Just need to remember to focus on my stroke and breathing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Happy with T1 (remembered to turn on the Garmin this time), and the only thing that slowed me down were my bike shoes. I have some difficulty slipping into them so I make sure to put them on in T1.

I had a powerbar gel in my tri top, but I lost it, either in transition or on the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - things went pretty smooth. Bodyglide acquisition the day before helped.

Tape my gel to the bike next time.

Comments:

Felt good on the bike - even though my HR was through the roof from the get go. I slowed things down a little when there were some descents to give the heart a breather.

I didn't pass too many people, but I also didn't get passed too much either. My pace was better than the Milton race, so that gave me some extra confidence.

But - I did almost crash. I was reaching for my water bottle while riding close to the shoulder, and I guess I lost concentration and veered onto the gravel shoulder, where I started to slide a bit. I started to unclip to put my foot down but that made things worse, so I just held on and started to slow down - but was too worried about touching the brakes. I got back on the road after lsing about 10 spots and got back up to speed. I'm glad I didn't go down, but I felt like a goofball.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to push my pace a little more consistently. I would go past people on the hills, but they would power away on the flats.

Also - next time, I have to remember to try not too crash!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Decided to try and get my feet out of the shoes while still riding, and it worked really well for me. I flew into the transition and ran straight for the tree where my stuff was laid out - btu it wasn't there. CRAP - wrong tree!! Lost a few seconds figuring this out, but got my runners and visor on and got going. Decided I didn't want to bother with the Garmin, so I left it on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Remember my parking spot!!
Run
  • 23m 31s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 42s  min/km
Comments:

Started the run with a stitch. I had eated my salty ham for breakfast but it didn't work like last weekend. I started off slowly, but didn't have to walk this time.

I got passed by about 4 people in my AG and with #4, I decided enough was enough, and kept pace with him. I started to feel a bit stronger about 2.5K in, and passed 3 of the 4 back, and ran well till the end.

I knew someone was just behind me, and with about 100 yards to go I lost an AG spot to a guy that came around me. I tried to go with him but had nothing left. I took a look afterwards and he ran a 4:13 pace - I wasn't going to catch him.
What would you do differently?:

Reasonably happy with the run, and again it was faster than Milton - just need to figure out the stitch issue.
Post race
Warm down:

None really - walk around a bit, grabbed smoe free food and beverages, and hung out while they did the awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm not sure that I could have done any better on the swim at this point, and on the bike I may be a bit limited my the power I put out. As for the run, I could have run a bit faster, but need to correct the issue of the stitch.

In the end though, I had a really big grin on my face, and was super happy with my performance (even though the strongest racers are doing the Oly on Sunday).

Event comments:

Really great venue, nice area in the conservation park, good people helping out. All and all, a lot of fun.
