Swim
Comments: Felt surprisingly good on the swim. Was able to stay in my rythm the entire time. Even passed 4 people! Boy, did I feel good about that! And I only got passed once. But my stroke felt really strong. Going under the lane lines sort of confused me. I took my time to make sure I wouldn't get tangled up. What would you do differently?: Probably didn't need to take so much time getting under the lane lines. Should have gotten in the pool earlier in the morning to practice the lane change. Transition 1
Comments: They didn't time the transitions so I don't know how I did, but I didn't have any problem finding my bike. Sat down to put my bike shoes on which took a little time with the velcro straps. Also, walked my bike to the start, stopped, and got on. Had a little trouble getting into my pedals. What would you do differently?: Need to practice getting the shoes on faster. Especially need to practice getting into my pedals. I think falling off the mountain bike so many times has got me a little gun shy about them.... but it would have saved me time to be more confident. Bike
Comments: Felt GREAT on the bike! REALLY strong! I was passing people left and right. Kept a steady cadence the entire ride, and pretty much stayed in the same gear since the course was flat. Felt like I was taking it a little easier than I had to to save energy for the run, but that ended up being a good idea. What would you do differently?: Slowed down a lot into the corner. Again, probably because my mountain bike related fear of falling. Took the corners with a lot more caution than necessary though. Also, didn't drink that much. Need to practice drinking while riding to get the necessary coordination. Not much of a problem on this short distance, but will be an issue with a longer race. Transition 2
Comments: Went past my bike spot which wasted a little time. Already had my shoes tied though so taking off the helmet and putting on the shoes was quick. What would you do differently?: Check out bike location from BOTH sides! Also, need to learn to get off the bike faster. I unclipped as I came up to the transition area, slowed down, stopped completely, and then got off. Need to learn to hop off the bike while it's moving like the cool kids.... (Seems to be a trend: Need to not be scared of those stupid clipless pedals) Run
Comments: Felt pretty rough on the run, but I guess I was pretty strong based on my ranking. Slowed down to drink at two of the four water points which I think was just enough. Needed water more to keep my throat from drying out than because I was thirsty. I think I pushed it just right though - started feeling bad right at the very end. What would you do differently?: Need to do some brick workouts biking and then running. It's a weird feeling on the legs! Post race
Warm down: Not much of a warm-down. Met up with husband and daughter and friend who ran as well. Had a banana, some orange slices, and a bottle of water. Wasn't sore the next day so I suppose that was fine. Of course that will be different with a longer race. What limited your ability to perform faster: This being my first race, I think I was a little cautious. I took the transitions slow, and didn't push myself too too much since I didn't really know how each event was going to go. I also didn't train race specific. Just ran and biked and swam whenever. Felt prepared for the swim though which was my biggest worry. Event comments: I really enjoyed this race. It was a little disorganized which I think is why we got started SO late (I didn't start until almost noon when my given time was 9.45). Also, no real need to be there at 6 AM when I preregistered since there was access to the transition area the entire time. It was a good first race though because the course was short and not too physically challenging so it allowed me to learn about racing and see where I stand with the technical aspect of each event. No real routine. Had to be there SO early to not start until the afternoon! Had a Slim Fast shake and a banana around 0700.
Got in the pool about 20 minutes before starting to get the jitters out. Not a lot of room to get many strokes in, but I think it was more worthwhile to get in the pool to convince myself that I still remembered how to swim.
