Pre-race routine:

3rd overall woman

Got up around 5:30ish and got dressed. Had weight smart oatmeal because it seems to last longer with me and a cup of coffee. Headed to race site. Got a little lost going to the golf club house instead of the athletic club house. No signage to help us out! We followed other lost triathletes around until we finally stumbled upon the right place. Packet pick up was a mess-- line out the door and at least a 15-20 min. weight. They had only 2 workers there when I was there.
Event warmup:

Once finally settled with numbers, timing chip and body markings I got my things set up in transition area. I did about a 10 min jog around, stop at porta potty and then warmed up in the pool. Did a few pickups only. I had decided to swim in my tri suit so it was my first try swimming with it on. The shirt is a little baggier than ideal.
Swim
  • 05m 22s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt pretty good in this swim. I didn't have to pass anyone and didn't get passed by anyone. I think it helps to seed yourself well. In previous swim portions of tris I tended to go anaerobic too quickly but this time I felt better.
What would you do differently?:

I need a new tri suit so that I don't feel the drag so much but given the short distance of this pool swim it wasn't a big factor.
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

T1 actually went fine. It helped that I was already in my biking shirt and didn't have to do this extra step. Still having a hard time getting clipped in quickly and moving.
What would you do differently?:

I need to continue to practice pushing off and quickly getting into position.
Bike
  • 44m 14s
  • 14 miles
  • 18.99 mile/hr
Comments:

When I shifted gears my chain kept skipping and it would take a few strokes for it to lock in. Felt a little rough and I worried that I wouldn't make it in. Felt like I wasn't getting all the power out of the bike like normal.
What would you do differently?:

Later learned that during a back tire change I must have tweaked something. Need to continue to build bike strength and endurance.
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

I felt wobbly getting off bike. It took me a few extra seconds to make it back to my transition station. Transition into running shoes went fine. I carried a towel during run to wipe off sweat and put on my number belt while going over the timing mat.
Run
  • 21m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt pretty bad starting out. My stomach seemed to be sloshing like I had had too many liquids but I hadn't drank anything since before the race started. But, at least it started with a little downhill to get you going.
Post race
Warm down:

I didn't do much warm down unless you count drinking a bottle of water and walking my things back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'd say that I need to work more on the bike. I need to ride longer outside and harder on hills.

Event comments:

Overall a good race and a good one for first timers. Also, a nice one to ease into the racing season.

Course: Pretty hilly course. It takes you from the transition area down around a small pond and out through a neighboorhood street and then you turn around and run back. There was a water station right after the turn around point. The last part seems to be all uphill. It felt brutal to me.
