Swim
Comments: The swim was great. I felt pretty good most of the way. I tried to draft as much as I could. Even though our wave was small, I was with a group of 4-5 most of the swim. We took turns drafting and there was alot of contact. It doesn't really bother me so no big deal. I started to feel pretty winded near the end of the swim and it seemed to take forever. I found out later that the swim was long by at least a couple hundred yards. The water temp was perfect and the crystal clear water made this the nicest open water swim I've ever done. What would you do differently?: Better drafting. Transition 1
Comments: T1 seemed a bit long because I was a little tired and my heart rate was up. Transition was close to swim and bike so my time was still pretty good. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: I started off on the bike not feeling great. I let my heartrate settle a bit before cranking up the speed. I never felt great on this ride but did feel good most of the time. I had a guy about 100 yards up the road that I kept trying to catch. On a better day I think I could have easily caught him....no today though. I felt pretty good on the climb but not great. This was my first mountain triathlon and I REALLY liked it. It is a very different feeling going 8mph passing people and sucking wind like a mofo. The descent was awesome. Easily maintained 45+mph for the entire thing. I felt better the second half of the ride but still never caught my "carrot". I think he finished about 1 minute ahead of me. What would you do differently?: Not much really. I felt good but not at my best....especially on the climbs. Transition 2
Comments: Good What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: I felt a little tired at the beginning of the run. It took me about 1.5 miles to settle. It was hard to settle into a good pace because of the constant up and down. At the turnaround, I realized I was about 3 minutes behind the guy in front (and he was motoring) and about 3 minutes ahead of the guy behind me. I felt really good the second half of the race and pushed the pace a bit. However, since I had no competition around me...I felt no need to go balls to the wall. I actually ran all of the run alone with the exception of the part of the run that crosses the sprint tri. I probably could have shaved a minute or so off my run time if I had somebody to catch. The run was shaded most of the way and they had plenty of water stations. What would you do differently?: Run faster...maybe? Post race
Warm down: Crossed the line and gave the family a hug. They were all standing right at the finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: Definately not back to 100% after Eagleman. I didn't really taper properly and my training has been sporadic for the last few weeks. I was probable 3-5 pounds overweight after EM recovery. Still, it was a good race for me and exactly the kind of race I wanted. Event comments: This is a great local race. The course is challenging and does attract some good athletes. Very well organized for a small event. The course is absolutely beautiful...especially the swim. Last updated: 2008-04-28 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:30. I was staying in a hotel about 20 miles south of Hague beach. Ate the usual breakfast at about 5am, packed up the family and left for the event at about 5:30. This was a casual, local race. Parking, check-in, transition, and finish were all about 100 yards from each other. The family got a good spot about 20 feet from transition. I racked my bike and set things up and played with the kids until about 7am. Put on my wetsuit at about 7:15am and did a quick warm-up swim.
Short swim and stretching.
