Swim
Comments: Good swim! Couldn't find anyone to draft, so I just did it on my own. I felt a couple hands on my feet, so it appears there was someone drafting off me. What would you do differently?: Find someone to draft. Transition 1
Comments: I think I make my transitions fast, but also deliberate. So I'm usually good compared to the field, however, I see how fast some of the leaders are and I have room for improvement. What would you do differently?: Work on being blazing fast, not just deliberate and fast... Bike
Comments: Pace was better than last year at this event. It's still hard to get my big body up those hills... According to BT routes, there was about 2650 feet of climbing. Why oh why can't I find a flat race course where my mass won't play as big of a role? My IM training has made me feel a lot better on the bike. I felt really strong after the bike portion and ready for the run. The course is a little boring though (5 loop course, and short). Transition 2
Comments: Again, I try to be fast but deliberate. Maybe even take a drink if I feel I can afford it... What would you do differently?: Make the decision to be blazing fast, not be so deliberate and carefull. Run
Comments: GREAT run!!! That pace was faster than my open 10k pace PR!!! WOOT!!! I'm getting faster. This is the first time I didn't feel like I was just surviving the run and trying to defend my position. I chased down at least 6-8 people and only had only one person pass me AND opened the small lead I had on a couple of men that got into T2 just behind me. Post race
Warm down: DRINK and EAT!!! They had some yummy breakfast tacos we were able to build ourselves. What limited your ability to perform faster: Maybe my cold, but just my weight and overall ability keeps me off the podium. Event comments: I was really sad/disapointed after the race. I truely believed I had a chance to get an award and podium spot in my AG. I am fast out of the water (typically), and I held my own on the bike and run this time. I didn't see any of my AG pass me, so I thought I was good based on the limited field. But I missed it by one spot (4th).... I realized I will probably never be really good at this sport. My size is too much of a liability. I can try to get strong enough to limit the damage due to my size and weight, but I will never completely get away from it. It sucks that I'm starting to get into a really competetive AG too. I was top 30% overall, but only about 50% in my AG (4th out of 8). I wouldn't have even placed in the NEXT AG higher than mine either! However, if I was in the age group of my real age, not the age I'm turning this year, I would have taken 3rd and and award. Thank god there is a Clydesdale division. I might have a chance there. All in all, I'm please with my performance. I can see the gains and improvements. I ran a perfect race despite the head cold. But I also see the limitations I have, and may need to start to recognize them. But for now, I'm going to keep on working to improve, and see how far I can take it. I can also see that I'm clearly getting better. I'm starting to beat people that I WANT to beat. People that look like they take tri seriously, have good bikes and bodies... I'm giving them a run for their money. Last updated: 2008-04-29 12:00 AM
