Pre-race routine:

I am laying there in bed... boom boom boom boom boom boom.... I swear the fatass that lives above me decides to run marathons around his bedroom ONLY when I decide to go to sleep. At one point I seriously thought about walking upstairs and giving him 10 bucks to sit the F down for 20 minutes so I could fall asleep. I finally fell asleep, even though there were about 10 gunshots outside (bridgeport, I'm used to it) I woke up, had my egg white omlette, a big cup of joe, a good poop and my parents were here to pick me up... (my mom was doing the 5k, her first)
Event warmup:

I don't really warm up. I stood around talking to people... Yo! Good Luck...

Comments:

I could see the Kenyans. I watched them warm up while I waited for the porto-potty, I managed to squeeze out about 4 drops of extremely yellow liquid that nearly stuck to that wierd plastic urinal thing that is built into the side like slimer ooze. I suppose I was a little dehydrated and it was HOT out. Haha.. probably not good. The Kenyans had pretty strides. I was jealous. I called the winner of the womens race from the line... she ended up winning too, Ethiopia.

So this is my second half marathon... As you can imagine, I was a little uneasy about pacing. I showed up and got my chip and all. I made my way to the start, I filed between all the superstars until I got about 7 rows before the front of the pack. .8 seconds until race time. 54321 go! The nice thing is everyone goes out hard, so at least I am not held up. Plus I am only seven rows back. I am running good. I think. form.form.form. My motto for the race. I am running wih my buddy Will who was looking to run a 1:35. He was hanging on my tail for the first quarter mile. Will beat me by 10 minutes at my first half marathon, Hartford, two years ago. I looked back at him and said. PEACE! I dropped him like a bad habit.

1st mile 6:12. Looking good. I can see the Kenyans still. The field has thinned out prety good now. This is the fast part of the course I know and I don't mind rocking low 6s because I'm going to pay for them later no matter what. Mile 2. 6:05. The crowd support is great. Kids are runnning down the street with super soakers squirting like its their job. Here comes the first hill. Mile 3. 6:30. Ouch that hurt. Ouch that hurt again. At this point I know there will be hills for the next 4 miles. When I say hills I don't mean small little inclines... I mean huge fucking hills that when you reach the top you want to bend over and put your hands on your knees and call it a day.

I am running with a pack of people. It's me, this marine guy with an annoying beaping heart rate monitor, and this other guy I call down hill. I call him this because I would destroy him on the uphills, then, he would come flying by my on the downhills. It went this way for 13 miles. Mile 5. The main hill mile, my slowest. 6:53. I get to the top and there is a line of 13 year old girls with water. WATER!. They say. LADIES LADIES LADIES! Thanks! But I am going to take it form my man here on the end. The one lucky 13 yeard old kid who gets to stand with a pack of girls for the day... goood for you brotha! All the fairfield county soccer mommies give a little giggle and I get a downhill... I giggle too. Down hill passes me and I laugh and he laughs too. The streets are shady and covered by the canopy above. I am comfortable, not too hot. I have had two gus by now. My water intake was probably lacking.

At this point, mile 8, 6:13, I drop annoying heart rate monitor marine guy. Me and downhill run neck and neck for the nex 2 miles.. We come out of Southport and we hit our last hill. Downhill tells me later at the last hill (1/2 mile long!) I dropped him by at least a quarter of a mile and it was all he could do to catch me.

At this point all I was thinking was sprinklers. I loved the old guys who shot me with water from their garden hoses. I saw a pack of runners, I thought I might be able to catch, but I was dead. Then I saw a Kenyan, walking... I said F THIS I am catching that pack. I ran and thought form. form. form. I was gaining. Then, out of no where I rose. I ran faster and overtook 5 runners. I wasn't looking back. At this point, with 1/4 mile left downhill surges passed me and says don't let me beat you! I say... go ahead. I'm done. I finish 2 seconds after him and 35th out of 1969.
