Pre-race routine:

Finally got to meet fellow BTer roni_runnw and her husband gslye the night before at the lake. They were kind enough to pick up my race packet for me (thanks Roni!). Roni had swam in the lake a few times previously and gave me some much needed pointers.
Woke up at 5:00am, stuff was ready to go, didn't feel overly nervous or sick to my stomach. Ate cranberry oatmeal and drank lots of water. Arrived at race at 6:30 with plenty of time to park, rack bike, get body marked, get wetsuit on, etc.
Event warmup:

Ate an espresso hammer gel and swam around some to get used to the water temp.
Swim
  • 20m
  • 900 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

First ever open water swim. I was pretty anxious about this, especially since everyone was talking about the water being so cold. With my wetsuit, though, the water temp wasn't an issue. Did feel a little panicky at times with people bumping into me, feeling so far away from shore and not being able to see, but I worked through it. Sighting was kind of difficult, I hadn't practiced this and did quite a bit of weaving, also the last buoy was small and hard to locate. But, overall, for my first OWS, I was pretty happy with myself.
What would you do differently?:

Practice OWS and just swim more in general. Use body glide more liberally.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Ran up hill into T1, got my wetsuit off pretty fast. Josh was there taking pictures and I remember telling him "that was scary".
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was smooth and fast.
Bike
  • 40m 1s
  • 12.7 miles
  • 19.04 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt great on bike. This course was really nice. Passed quite a few people and played leapfrog with two women who got around me for good right after the turnaround point when I decided to eat a hammer gel. Tried to keep them in my sight and I pretty much did (ended up passing at least one of them on the run). I went pretty much all out on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Try aerobars and a new saddle.
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

T2 was really fast. Used a visor on the run for the first time and liked it.
What would you do differently?:

I grabbed a goo at T2, which I never used and carried around in my shorts. Might not be necessary in sprint distance, but seems nice to have just in case.
Run
  • 23m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt like I could have pushed it a little more on the run. In any case, I passed several people and never got passed and still had a kick at the end. (Wow, they just posted the official run splits and I can't believe my pace and that I felt like I had more to go! 6th fastest female overall! Awesome!)
What would you do differently?:

Go all out on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in the sun with Josh and the dog and watched people come in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim is always my weakness, that's just how it is. Aerobars and a different saddle probably could have helped a little on the bike. Go all out on the run.

Event comments:

I was a little anxious about this race because of the OWS and also because I felt that I hadn't been training as much as I should have a couple of weeks prior, but I was really happy with my performance despite these things. I really wish that I had each split time so I could see how I did on the individual sections, swim bike and transitions were all lumped together, so run is only thing I know for sure. This was a fun course and a beautiful day. It was only my second tri, so I'm sure I still have some learning to do. Overall, though, I feel like I did the best I could and I beat my previous time, which I didn't expect to do. In general this was a great race. And it was fun!!
