Comments: I was the first leg of our relay which included a 1/4 mile run in full bike gear (helmet, camelbak, bike shoes, etc.). There were probably around 130 people on the course at one time and the run had a slight uphill leading to a downhill singletrack that could not accommodate everyone. I ended up on the uphill side and twisted my ankle twice, but did not injure myself. Our team of 6 completed 17 laps in 24 hours, which seemed fairly respectable considering none of us have really been training. This is an early season race and there's still snow on lots of the trails around Butte. I completed 3 laps (44.25 miles). Lap 1: This was at Noon on Saturday. It was hot. Went out too hard on the run, passing quite a few people. Ended up getting passed by LOTS of people on the bike, but mostly men. The course seemed kind of congested and there were a few bottlenecks, getting stuck behind slower people on the singletack sections etc. First lap time was 1:18:18. I thought that I looked at my watch right before I jumped on my bike after running and that it read 7 minutes something, so riding time for the first lap was closer to 1:11. Lap 2: Headed out for the second lap around 7:00 pm. It cooled off considerably and I felt great. Traffic on the course had really spread out by this time. Time was 1:16:50. Lap 3: 2:30 am. I took a little nap in the car before this lap and was sure to set lots of alarm clocks to wake up and ride again. This was my first time night riding and it was a strange sensation. A little scary. I was determined not to hit a tree or have a bad wreck and took it pretty easy. In the last 2 miles my headlamp died. I had a spare battery but didn't want to take the time to stop and hook it all up. Ended up running through some big mud puddles, but otherwise was fine. This lap took me 1:34:04. My legs were definitely tired on the hills this lap. I had the opportunity to do a fourth lap and wanted to and felt like I could have, but did not want to completely wear myself out considering my first triathlon is next weekend. I'm proud of myself for not overdoing it. What would you do differently?: Ride more before hand! This was probably only my 4th or 5th mtb ride of the year due to the fact that I got a new bike that just got put together and late snow on the trails around Butte. Practice night riding. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Ate pancakes. What limited your ability to perform faster: The dark. Otherwise I don't think I could have gone much faster. Felt pretty good. Event comments: This was a really great race. I will most definitely do it again.... maybe, maybe even try solo one day! Last updated: 2008-04-30 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:30am and drove the 3 hours from Missoula to Spokane. Thought I'd be tired, but wasn't. It was beautiful out. Met up with the rest of the team - Bob, Guy, Seth, Tianna and Mary Ann. I was really impressed with where the race was held in Riverside State Park. Everyone had camp sites set up along the edge of the trees. It was a really fun, friendly atmosphere.
I was designated as the first leg of the relay, which included a LeManns start. Did a little bit of stretching and rode the course backwards a couple of miles.
