Pre-race routine:

out of bed early. coffee, protien shake and a banana.
This was my first race of the year, and my first tri sine the Tri the Creek last summer.
Event warmup:

I decided since I needed to pack everything in a backpack and the reservoir is not all that far from my house (About 12-miles) I would ride my bike to the race. So, that was my warm-up. Also, I did get in the water and swam a few yards just to get comfortable in the water.
Swim
  • 22m 16s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim time includes a short run up a hill to the TZ. Time on my watch was 20:16. This course was long. Before the race I looked at the bouys and it appeared long to me. Commented to some guy that I thought it was long and he said it looked about right. Anyway, everyone I talked with after the race seemed to think it was long by at least 200 meters. Oh well, we all had to swim the same loop.
I started out feeling pretty good but just never was able to draft anyone. Seemed to take forever to get to the turnaround. Once I did, I knew that the course was long.
What would you do differently?:

I am not the most confident swimmer. Not that I have ever gotten into trouble on the swim but I just never push my self nearly as hard swimming as I do on the bike or run. I think I could push the swim a little harder.
Transition 1
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

Before the race I had decided to go sockless to save some time. I had socks with me because i had ridden my bike to the rez and would be riding home. While swimming I started thinking about the run without socks. I didn't want to deal with getting any blisters so I made the decision then I would dig them out of my backpack and put them on. I know my transitions need some work. Maybe I should practice!
What would you do differently?:

just about everything!
Bike
  • 35m 51s
  • 13.67 miles
  • 22.88 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt this was a pretty good bike for me. I think I could have gone faster had I stayed on my aerobars more. I crashed last summer and I am still somewhat more cautious than I was before the crash. Just not as agressive. Also, there was a section where the road was a little tore up and when I hit it I dropped my chain. I got it back on without stopping but I lost a little there. Overall though this was a pretty good bike for me. I was only passed once (of coure by now all the fast guys were already in front of me).
What would you do differently?:

Stay on the aeros more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

faster than the 1st one.
Run
  • 23m 9s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

when I first started running I was experiencing some stomach issues but this soon passed. This was an out and back course and the first 1/2 mile the incoming runner's were to my right. Just as I was approaching a merge with the oncomming runner's I had a direct collision with a guy...I was really expecting him to stay to the right...wrong call! I don't think he was really happy with me but we both just continued on. Right after I noticed the runner's were to my left...so we just happened to meet up the worst possible spot in the race. They ran out of water on the course but there was gatoraid. I would have loved to have a cup of water to splash on my face...but not gatoraid!
What would you do differently?:

maybe jump over the guy?
Post race
Warm down:

I was really hungry so I did stay and have some pizza and talk with a few people but had to pass on the free beer (I hate doing that). I didn't hang out very long. It was my daugther's 9th birthday and I wanted to get home to help get her celebration going. So I rode home...legs were pretty tired so I took it easy. I was home by 10:45...15-minutes later than i had said I would be. I blame this on the long swim!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

for sure I should have been better prepared for the transitions...but then, I always say that! But really, this would be the easiest was for me to take a minute or 2 off my overall time. Also, I was disapointed with my run. I think I could have pushed this harder, I don't know how much faster I would have been...but I just didn't feel I pushed it to the next level. I need to increase my running mileage and intesity on training runs.

Event comments:

this is a fun race that's near my home. I like the fact I don't have to load my bike on the car and drive 30+ miles to race. Also, they had race day packet pick-up. I wish more races would do this! I hate making a drive just to pick-up a race packet!
They did mis-measure the swim course but I'm not too bent out of shape over that (even though that is my worst event). Some fast guys at this race!
