Age Group Rank = 3/8
Pre-race routine:

Hot Shower, stretch out legs and hydrate. Large PB&J Bagel 2.5 hours prior to swim wave. Pro 4 gel 45 minutes before wave start. 4 ~ 6 oz. Pro 4 Energy and Electrolyte drink.
Event warmup:

Hot shower at pool. Swim one length (50 yds.) to get HR elevated.
Swim
  • 08m 56s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

4 swimmers per lane, 5 sec sends was typical. However our lane only had 3. I was first off, second swimmer went 10 secs, third went on 15 secs. I had a 10 sec head start and was able to maintain the lead until the last lap. We did at one point lap our third swimmer. The lanes seemed really narrow in this pool, so I clipped #3 a couple of times as he swam towards the middle too much. I thought at one point I'd lost my watch.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Forgot to set up shoes in the "open" position, but with only one strap, no big deal. This is a point-to-point race, so I stuck everything in the transition bag and handed it to my wife so that we didn't have to come back and retrieve anything at T1.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except maybe open my shoes up.
Bike
  • 38m 52s
  • 13.2 miles
  • 20.38 mile/hr
Comments:

I was motivated by the guys that passed me early on. I kept thinking, "You're gonna pay for that!" I never let them get too far ahead, then I'd take them on the inclines. By about 3 ~ 4 miles into it, the three guys who passed me early were no longer a threat. I played leapfrog with a member of the local tri group Ironheads, taking him on the hills when possible. He pulled ahead near the finish and continued to gap me on the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

What is it about people that makes them just throw their shit right over your towel in transition? I staked out T2 with only two others there, and people racked their bikes right over mine stuff. Asses!!

Run
  • 23m 24s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt really good on the run. Had a gel just before finishing the bike and followed with liquid. Had a sip or two of water at the first aide station, but felt good enough to pass it up on the way back
What would you do differently?:

Try to run faster!!
Post race
Warm down:

Cross finish and keep walking before turning in chip. 8 oz of water and half an orange.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

23 pound bike?

Event comments:

There was only one drink station necessary for the out-and-back run. Post race was a little hard to hear announcements and the results area could've been more accessible.

Course: Fast first few miles with good opportunity to get warmed up well. You don't really start hitting any climbing, inclines or rollers until about 4 ~ 7 mark. You basically max out the elevation just after 7 miles, then go into a very fast and smooth downhill. 41.4 mph Max Speed. From there it's slight rollers and a final cross over the highway, then pretty flat to the finish.
