Pre-race routine:

Up early and porridge with fresh strawberries. Turned up quite early so had to wait until the whole thing kicked off.
Event warmup:

There was some warm up on site but beforehand it was a choice of standing in the sun (and potentially getting too hot) or in the shade - where I shivered. The warm up was quite poor really and ended 30 minutes before we started. I decided to spend the first 5 minutes warming up when I got going. Yet again before I was so cold that my shoulders and neck hurt because I was tensing up.

Comments:

It went much, much better than I expected. I started with a 5' brisk walk to warm up and before I knew it I was at 1km! After this I jogged within my comfort zone. I felt like I was pushing it just enough. At 7km my knees were complaining a little bit but it was better than I've normally experienced in training. I did get some hip pain in both hips from about 9k, I managed a bit more effort for the last 50 yards but was at my peak really.
What would you do differently?:

Not attend the warm up, start in the right category, warm up properly before setting off.

Warm down:

Walked quite a lot afterwards and did plenty of stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training - but to be honest I did really well and much better than I expected.

Event comments:

Really pleased with my progress and would probably do it next year as well. 7306 out of nearly 12000 who started and 10216 who finished.
