Pre-race routine:

*** Quick note, since they didn't post overall positions I just added up each age group for overall totals. I was going to go by numbers which started at 1, but those went to 566 which seemed a tad bit high. ***

Woke up, ate a banana, and a bar and drank some fluids. Friend came over and then we took off.
Event warmup:

Worse choice of my life. I wasn't feeling great before the race and I wanted to see how I felt in the water. Last year the water was way warmer then outside, so I figured it would be the same. This year it was around 73-74, which isn't bad but after I got out from my short swim I was shivering pretty badly. Great Warm up! (not)

Comments:

Don't feel like manually counting the people who beat me. ;p

Now keep in mind I rarely ever curse.

So we're waiting in the water, and I'm shivering pretty good(which I've been doing for 15min now). Then a guy next to me goes, you're shivering pretty good there. I reply, I'm F****** freezing my ass off. Giving I've never had a good open water swim, ever. This wasn't a good way to start. I took off I had wanted to grab a good swimmers feet and come in around 6:45 if all went well.

So I started off hard and just quickly felt badly. There was some running into people, bumps and kicks but nothing out of the ordinary. It's only 200m to the turn so I just focus on that, sighting isn't a issue for me I work it into my stroke easly. I get to that I go in for a tight turn around it, and run into somebody so a slight traffic jam at the turn. then we start heading back towards land and it's much more open. I should of really focused on going quick here, but I didn't. Or I did and my first 200 just really sucked. :)
What would you do differently?:

shouldn't of swam before the race, it really made me cold.

Comments:

A little slow, maybe? I put my shoes on in t1 for sure on these smaller races so some people may of gone faster.

Had a couple slips, not many, but enough that with out of them I would of broke 25:00 on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.. just get my 2nd shoe clipped in the first try.

Comments:

Ok so the bike course is pretty bad, but it's still fun. Except for one spot where they made it a No Pass Zone. I had no intention of following this rule.. but they had a ton of people working that area and I'd rather give up 10-20s behind a slower guy than 2min penalty. For future reference if you are a race Director.. Don't do this, it's horrible. On a short course like this getting stuck behind someone going 3mph slower then I was could very well cost me a few costly seconds. This race is about seconds afterall.

Ok on to the actual effort of the bike. I went into this ride wanting to ride a bit harder than normal, I wanted a 24+ avg and at any other bike course on the same day I would of got it. So the first half is the more techincal part of the course and I start passing people right away. Then one guys gets the idea to pass me. I told him some words of encouragement as he passed me, but in my head I was saying NO WAY PUNK NOT TODAY. Fifteen seconds later I was passing him. I didn't have anymore punks try to pass me after that! (the guy came to me after the race and said good bike leg, you made me push harder than I probably would of)

After that I was just riding hard, of course trying to save enough for the run(and next weekend!) when I came up to the no pass zone and of course I get stuck behind someone. I wasn't too happy about that what so ever.
What would you do differently?:

Push even more.
Transition 2

Comments:

One of the fastest ones of the day, Ben beat me by 4 seconds but he already had his running shoes(put shoes on in t1).

What would you do differently?:

Rack bike a bit neater, I came back and it was a bit off.

Comments:

The two guys who beat me are awesome runners their times were 17:10 and 16:40. One beat me overall by 20 seconds, I beat the other by 5 seconds. Like I said this race is all about seconds. 2nd,3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th were all within 40s of each other, then it's a bit of a gap. First was also a good ways up at 49:37.

I probably breathed harder during the first mile then I did on the last one. It took me a bit to get going, but once I did I went good. I wasn't catching too many people becuase I was only in the 2nd wave and by the end of the bike I was pretty far up. I may of passed 6 people and finished.. 4th? Not bad for being in the 2nd wave. :)
What would you do differently?:

I had captex in the back of my mind, I think that made me hold back a little bit. In a perfect world I would of liked to gutted it out completely, but back to back races with the more important one is still coming up.. I think I held a little back, not much though!
Post race
Warm down:

Easy 1.5mile jog. Oh and then a 35mile bike ride back home with Roger(who got 3rd and overall master).
It should of been a mere 20-23miles.. but we took his way which apparently isn't a direct route. lol

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm like a dead fish in the water.

Event comments:

The bike course is the only thing I can complain about for this race.

Course: Now this is a real good triathlon, but this bike course is horrible and it was horrible last year and the year before. It's not a make it or break it deal, it's just a horrible bike course. It starts off going through neighbor hoods and has a ton of turns, and they always put cones on the aphex you want t take it seems.
