Swim
  • 21m 22s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Current was strong and waves were breaking at breathing level. I ended up switching between freestyle, breast, and backstroke for a good portion of the race which then left me exhausted for the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Find more opportunities to train in open water conditions so that I can learn to swim efficiently in similar conditions.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

I was wiped out from the swim and moving slower than expected after that. I haven't mastered jumping on the bike and have shoes that I put on before leaving transition. Wetsuit was easy and quick to remove.
What would you do differently?:

Practice swim-bike transition so that it feels more natural.
Ok for first time!
Bike
  • 55m 1s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 13.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Inefficient swim really tired my legs and the first half of the bike segment was much slower than typical.
What would you do differently?:

practice swim/bike segments
Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

When I got back to transition, my spot on the rack had been taken and I had to search for another place. This transition was a little better although I did take a few minutes for some extra hydration.
What would you do differently?:

Try to be faster on the bike so I'm not the last one back in my section!
Run
  • 36m 45s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Worst 5k ever! I ran out of steam on this one and ended up walking some intervals which I did not plan on at all.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I felt like I exerted far too much energy on the swim which affected my performance on the bike and run segments.

Event comments:

Race was a fun event and I'm glad that I participated. Overhearing people who had participated in the past, the swim portion of the race was much more difficult than previous years due to the windy condition. From what I've read about past races it seems to have become more typical of other race instead of a smaller locally geared event. In the past they offered unique awards that were location specific. The clambake was tasty. It would have been nice if there was some shaded seating areas for eating and awards.
