Pre-race routine:

Not much to it this time, coming off three weeks with no training I didn't put much into the pre race routine. Packed my stuff the night before, got up at 3am, started the drive down at 3:30.
Event warmup:

Not much to speak of, maybe 75 meters of swimming
Swim
  • 28m 53s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

This the part of the race that I'm most pleased with and where I learned a lot. I was so concerned about not being ready that I decided to focus on swimming efficiently rather than fast. Even after going way off course b/c I started to swim towards the sprint course buoys I finished with what may have been my best swim time and I came out of the water feeling fresh. I'm going to focus on efficiency more often.

Comments:

Three weeks off affected my mental attitude more than my physical fitness and it was on the run where it really fell apart.

I was doing pretty well for the first 3 miles or so and then my head totally fell apart. My body could have continued to run but my head kept telling me to walk a bit. Then the negative self talk kicked in and it all spiraled down from there. The last two miles I walked just as much as I ran.

Embarrasing really, everyone was very nice by telling me that I did well considering the long break but the more I think about it the more pissed I am at myself.
What would you do differently?:

Either Positive self talk or tell my head to shut the F up!
Post race
Event comments:

This was a valuable race and I think will do more for me in the future than had I trained and done well. I learned a valuable lesson about my swim, I learned something about my nutrition during the bike, and I learned a great deal about what i need to do mentally if I really want to improve. Time to focus.
