Swim
Comments: Was disappointed when the swim became wetsuit legal. That and the short swim took away some advantage from me. Starting in wave 13 of 14 made the swim an obstacle course the entire time. What would you do differently?: Push harder. I totally loafed the swim as usual. Swimming at sea level is so much easier but I don't really push harder as I should. Transition 1
Comments: Was very dizzy again and had to take it slow. What would you do differently?: Be a minute faster. Bike
Comments: This ride didn't go well. Messed up my computer trying to reset it in the dark so I had no idea of how fast I was riding. I had enormous amounts of bike traffic to pass since I started so late. Often I'd have to pass people who were riding three abreast and was being blocked from passing very often. It was not much fun. Didn't push very hard as I was having trouble with the humidity and nervous about cramping on the run. Drank six bottles of gatorade and ate clif blocs. Wasn't that hot but I was sweating so badly I was worried. This balance of effort on the bike so I can still run 13.1 is hard to figure out. I think I should have pushed 1 mph harder as I felt almost too fresh on the start of the run and was still dead tired at the end. What would you do differently?: Get better on the run so I can push the bike hard. Transition 2
Comments: Was going to run without a shirt as every other race I've been in has allowed but I was stopped and told it was illegal and had to run back to my transition to get one. That wasted at least 0:45. Otherwise good. Run
Comments: Very hilly. Even though I really wanted to go under 2:00 I felt this was the best part of my race. At Boulder I was pretty much exactly MOP. Here I was 524/1929. Felt very good off the bike. I did the first three in 24:30. The next three felt good and then I slowly degraded into a death march but still 8 minutes faster than Boulder on a much harder course. I did pretty well with my hydration but a couple minutes after the race I got a very severe dehydration headache and started cramping pretty badly. Got two liters of fluid via IV and was shipshape. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: IV in med tent. What limited your ability to perform faster: Should have pushed both the swim and bike a little harder but that could have hurt my run. So I really don't know. Event comments: The race was great but I went down to Austin with a long-time friend who was supposed to race the Aquabike and bailed on me. He then had no interest in the race and made of bunch of other plans for us. So I missed out on all the Triathlon festivities and hanging with my Texas tri friends. Very disappointing. Also my sister got really sick and so she and her husband couldn't go. Bummer. Also, since I finished so late and had to visit the med tent I didn't get to meet up with other BTers after the race. Again, very disappointing. Last updated: 2008-05-10 12:00 AM
