Pre-race routine:

Due to my lack of god given creative talent combined with my low score on the verbal portion of the SAT test, I have decided to try not to embarrass myself with my lack or race reporting talent (especially when compared to one fellow donkey who can be very creative and write lioke a mother&&$*^# who shall remain nameless - yes Scoobysdad) and am taking a different approach with this RR. (I just got yelled at so I am adding to my report to satisfy a certain donkey)
Event warmup:

Woke up at 2:45 AM. It wasn't too long ago when I used to be getting home at this time - now I'm getting up to go race - my how we "mature" when we get older. Scary, but I actually like getting up at this time of day to do this stuff. Had everything loaded in car the night before so just got breakfast and water bottles and jumped in the car. Ate M&M pancakes w/peanut butter, banana, cup of joe, 2 endurolytes and a bottle of water on the ride down while rocking out to good music with Joe Runner. Went to outlet mall exit to take care of business at the rest stop - great plan - clean and no one else there. Found parking and waited for bus to shuttle down. Crammed me self on school with my bag o'stuff. Did not like so much. Next year I'm parking at the outlet mall and walking.

Set up transition at designated bike rack - though about moving to take advantage of the better racks but just stayed put. I broke my front valve stem on my biek tire when filling up with air. I decided to not change it at the time because it was not leaking air and pray it didn't flat on the bike. If it did I was ready to accept the additional time on the bike leg. Finished up saw Cat from work who was doing her second tri and found a whole gaggle of fellow donks. Went for a warm up (if you know what I mean) swim with Wildee and Force. Waited for wave to start in the donkey corral.
Swim
  • 27m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Waited in the back of my wave to start, since the "beach" is small and your time didn't start until you crossed the mat. About 10 of us waited until the rest of the wave was past the first orange bouy and then we entered the water. Great move. There was plenty of space to get in the water and start swimming. I stayed outside on the left for the first leg to stay out of traffic. Rounded the first bouy and right into the sun. I remembered what Wildee had said the night before - go for the power plant.
Thanks to Wildee for the sighting tip - worked great. Turned the last bouy and headed for home. Bilateralled breathed for the whole swim to stay relaxed and keep HR down. Didn't know if you had to go right around the last bouy before getting out of the water so I just followed everyone else around just in case.

I had some business to take care of on #128 but I never did see him. Sorry Schmize.
What would you do differently?:

Will get much better with consistent training and lack of one certain dog in the neighborhood.
Transition 1
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

Nice short run out of the swim to transition spot but long run to bike out - Uck. Got out of wetsuit fine, shoes, socks, helmet and glasses on fine and then the looooong run to the bike out. The pavement was slippery so I more did a shuffle. Should have maybe ran with bike shoes as suggested by Force.
What would you do differently?:

Sucky spot. Should have moved racks like the fast one did. Next year I'll try to practice leaving shoes on bike and doing the flying mount - I am just not coordinated or brave enought to do that this year.
Bike

Comments:

Since I was int he third wave the course was pretty open on my first lap. The plan was to take the second lap faster than the first. The first lap went by pretty fast. As I came by the Jelly Belly factory the first time, I could see the beginning of the course and what a cluster $&^% it was, there were so many bikes. Made it to the turnaround and almost got cut off by someone who wanted to save 1/10 of a second on that tight turn. Nice. Entered the melee and decided to see how many people I could pass. The second loop went fast. Your mind gets preoccuppied with all the people, shouting on the left, thanking volunteers, and remember to take in nutrition that I was to the rough road in what seemed mere minutes - I took this section very easy because I knoew it was nly a 1/2 mile or so. Went single file in a lane that I knew did not have potholes. Got out of this section and then hammered it home. Unclipped shoes a little too early because I forgot all the twist and turns going back into transition.
What would you do differently?:

Put cattle guard on bike and run over newbies who don't stay left. Build up more miles to be able to push harder. Race wheels next year?
Transition 2
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

Had to run to complete opposite corner from the Bike In. Did my shuffle and found my stuff buried on three different wetsuits. I don't know the proper ettiquitte for this, so I just took them and threw them off my stuff. Stepped in big puddle of water putting shoes on - I was not too happy cuz my feets blister easily. Grabbed hat and belt and off I went - to the other opposite corner of transition to the bike out.
What would you do differently?:

Not have to run to the complete opposite end of transition and then run back. Not whining though - I guess I am.

Comments:

Settled into a groove very early. Ended up pacing with a guy named Mike for the first 4 miles. Nice guy, knows Travis. I like these looped courses that give you the chance to see everyone multiple times. Legs got stiff around the 3 - 3/12 mile mark when running on the concrete road towards the west. Didn't realize we were running into the wind at that point until the turnaround. Realized how hot it was on the way back when running with the wind. Saw Schmize on the way out - looked good. Saw Jeff, Mark, Schwimmy Coach, PJ - who was really hurtin. Picked it up around mile 4 and gave it all I could after the 5 mile mark. Saw Terri and AmyJo at this point. I was on a mission to finish and Terri wanted a high five, kiss or something. Ran right by and gave her the Heisman - not good. Gave a shout out to the Fire Department at the last turn and headed for home. Got a donkey shout out from Ms. Schmize 100 yds. from the finish - thanks. Let up 10 yards from the end to let a sprinter get his photo op.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster earlier. I waited to mile 4 to pick it up. Too late. One of these days I am going to go balls out until I puke too see what happens - I'm just a little cautious after SOR.
Post race
Warm down:

Drink two bottles of water and ate some bagels. Found the Mr and Mrs Schmize. Photo op with the fast one. 17th Overall - can't buy that kind of speed. Waited 100 yds out from the finish to cheer on fellow donks. Met up with Force and Wildee at the finish line. Decided to walk up the course a 1/4 mile from the finish to give a donkey shout out to JR and AJ. Both looked good coming in in PR time. Checked in with everyone, swapped stories for a few minutes then decided to go find Maggyruth out on the course to provide some encouragement - no donkey left behind. Force and I went on the course while the others waited near the finish line. Found Peggy - she looked hot and tired - we just gave her as much encouragement as we could without really talking to her. She doesn't like that you know :). Hugs and kisses all around at the finish line and then proceeded to do the shuttle. Decided to ride the shuttle and drive car to transition to pick up. So glad I did, the bike back was uphill and my bag weighs a ton.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me, myself and I. With my training this summer I am happy with where I am. I know next year I can do better and am looking forward to it.

Event comments:

Once again, I really enjoyed this race. I find this distance a perfect challenge between pace and speed. It was great to see all the overall effort and PR's from all my new friends. EEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWSome job everyone. The venue is pretty good also. The swim and run are great - the bike left a little to be desired because of the 2 loop deal but I understand that was only becasue of road construction this year. I will definitely be back next year.
