Pre-race routine:

I spent the weekend at my sister's place in San Diego (Ocean Beach to be exact). The night before we were up late celebrating her friend's birthday. Fortunately I managed to limit myself to one glass of wine, but I didn't get to sleep until around midnight. We got up around 5, loaded the car, went to Starbucks for coffee and a maple scone, drove to Camp Pendleton.
Event warmup:

After parking, we had to walk about 3/4 of a mile to the transition area. Picked up my shirt and swim cap, got marked, set up my stuff, and waited with my sis for a few minutes until they told us to head to the swim start for the pre-race briefing. It was a LONG walk to the swim area. I was in wave 7 of 8, so I just hung out with my sis and watched the first waves leave, put on my wetsuit, then got in the water.

The time included the ridiculously long run back to transition, but I haven't been swimming much at all lately, and it showed. Also, I did a crappy job putting my wetsuit on, so my shoulders felt a little tight. That combined with my confusion due to the weird shape of the course made for a rather unpleasant swim.
What would you do differently?:

Train more... a lot more.

The results don't appear to include the transition times. Anyway, I took off my wetsuit, quickly washed the sand off my feet, put on shoes, helmet, and sunglasses. Everything went pretty smoothly, but I did manage to get my wetsuit stuck briefly on one heel.

I didn't feel so great at the beginning because of my crappy swim and the tiring beach run back to T1, but once I got going I concentrated on maintaining a comfortable pace and staying hydrated. After about 15-20 minutes I started to feel really good, so I started to push myself more. I spent quite a bit of time in aero going upwards of 20mph, which was a lot of fun. I passed a lot of people, especially near the end.

I'm slow, but I'm getting better. I felt good the whole time, made sure to hydrate at each aid station, and really pushed myself for the last couple miles. It was frustrating that there were no mile markers, but at least there were 2 loops so I knew when I was halfway done.

Warm down:

Met up with my sister, had a couple of orange slices and most of a hamburger, then packed up and hurried back to the car so we could get back to her place and set up for the real event of the day, BACONOFF 2008! I stuffed myself with about 10 different bacon creations and probably a case of beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The main factor was my laziness when it comes to swim training. Second was my slowness on the run, but at least my performance there was to the best of my current ability. I've only been doing this for 9 months!
