Swim
Comments: No expectations here. Just started swimming again about 6 weeks ago and very limited at that due to sore shoulders. But I was actually a few seconds faster that last year and felt pretty good. What would you do differently?: Going to take a few lessons with a total immersion guy in Castle Rock and see if I can learn a shoulder friendly stroke. Transition 1
Comments: The tight bike racks were a problem here. Had to work my way between four people to get back to my bike and then found a big guy sitting on his butt right in my area. Finally got my stuff and then headed out. First time running in socks with shoes already clipped on. Worked out great and was still 15 seconds faster than last year, even with delays. What would you do differently?: This one is on HRCA. Bike racks were WAY too constricted and they assigned the racks by swim heats, meaning everyone in the heat came out together to the same rack. Doesn't make any sense to me. Bike
Comments: Chilly starting out, especially my legs. I really felt like I was pushing well, staying in aero but I ended up being about 30 seconds slower than last year? I didn't get passed by anyone which was very surprising. Nearly t-boned a cyclist at Lucent/HR Parkway because he rode right through the cop's stop signal. Saw a rider down on the course near Thunder Ridge HS, hope she's ok! Got a little stomach cramp but overall I felt good and my legs felt strong, maybe too strong. What would you do differently?: I'm kind of at a loss here. I had done more riding over the winter and this spring prior to this year's race than last year's but I was slower. It was definitely windier than last year but that works both ways. But the bike is without a doubt where I am losing a ton of time and need to get this figured out. Transition 2
Comments: First one back to my rack so lots of room this time. Again, took my feet out of my shoes on the bike and then hopped off at dismount. This is truly the way to go. Knocked 15 seconds off last year's time. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Legs felt great off the bike but my feet were numb! In fact they pretty much stayed numb until about 2 miles in. I don't know if this was from being cold or from poor circulation. Stayed pretty even throughout but my breathing picked up in the last mile. At the turnaround I saw guy running pretty fast and didn't want to get passed. Stayed steady until about 2.5 and peaked back and saw him within a hundred yards. Picked it up and finished strong but I was definitely breathing hard. Ten seconds faster than last year. What would you do differently?: Need to get my speedwork going. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and stretched. Should have done a cooldown but I had to get to my son's baseball game. Drank a bottle of HEED and had a bagel piece. Headed over to the Cozard's post tri get together and got to meet Mel, Terry, Shannon, Ockey, Ben, Susan, and Ted. Great time and thanks for the burritos! Felt great rest of day and no soreness whatsoever. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bike, bike, bike. And to a lesser extent swim, swim, swim. Oh, and my apparent refusal to suffer on the bike. Still I was 17 seconds faster than last year, even with a slower ride. Event comments: More vendors and better post race stuff than last year. Need to address: transition area and bike rack assignments. More body markers. Last updated: 2008-05-15 12:00 AM

Up at 5:15, ate a Cliff Bar and sipped on some HEED. Arrived at the race at 6:00 to a long line for body marking. To the excitement of a few people in line, I brought my own sharpie. Took turns bodymarking ourselves and headed in to transition, where much to my wondering eyes did appear: bike rack spacing more suited for children.
Wedged my bike into the rack and hoped for the best.
Just stretched out my shoulders a bit and that was it.
