Pre-race routine:

I was basking in the glow of crushing Bonny in texas hold the night before.. I was smart enough to let her win the first game so she would be overconfidant,, I even was drinking a couple of beers which I shouldn't do before a race.. that morning we got everyone up and loaded in decent time to get to the site.. It was Bonny driving with the fuel gauge on "E" but I didn't want to inquire since she knows her vechile better than I. William who was half asleep and Britney.. Thankfully Britney was in the car so I didnt' have to be the lone New Kids on the Block hater. William had no idea who this band was, Ah the beauty of youth, he doesn't have to block out their music.
Event warmup:

I got a great race spot,, everyone was attempting to get on the ends closer to the middle, but where we come up from the swim you had enough space to go down the ends of the racks so I had the rack spot on the end of the first row closest to the bike and run exit all to myself. I saw three former cancer patients of mine.. it was awesome to see that they were doing so well and still doing tri's What sucked is I later found out that one of them [traci] beat me.. then again she is younger and in shape but hey they should let me win :) I walked around got to talk with lots of people, attempted to introduce britney to a couple of people also. I think it's cool that not only do I recognize some familiar faces but people are recognizing me or more aptly my smart sense of humor at o'dark thirty. I did about a 5 min jog then headed down for a quick swim, one last check of my bike to make sure my alarm was set on the wheels.
Once I got done with my swim the lady that was racked next to me husband still hadn't shown up with her bike shoes that she forgot, then she said that a couple of people were looking at my bike but that nothing was tapered with.. hmmmm forshadowing????

Comments:

first time doing a beach start,, made sure I was far to the left since I was planning on breathing to the right side. up to the first bouy I was a drafting machine,, doing well finding someone, then getting passed and jumping on them..a couple of times I pushed someone away to protect my space, and also jumped their legs like we practiced at the swim clinic at the first bouy I was behind 2-3 people that were side by side letting them fight it out. we make the turn and they all stop.. WTH!!! why do people sprint to the first buoy then stop.. so I just went on though.. after the 1st buoy the waves kicked up a bit, but what I hate is that smell of gasoline in the water, I got two mouthfulls of it between the 1st and 2nd buoy. finally just before the 2nd buoy some of the fast swimmers caught up to me and I jumped behind them and really had to move to keep up but after rounding the 2nd buoy my left foot cramped bad.. so while I didnt' stop I couldn't point my toes.. I was attmepting to stretch it out but that really slows you down when you can't point your toes.. as soon as it went away, and I'd point my toes it returned so I just found a spot where I could keep my foot pointed and not cramp.. It seemed everyone was heading to the little opening where the usual beach bouoys are,, I just decided to go straight to the exit and go over them ,, some one in a kayak asked if I was ok and I said that I was ok. it's hard for me to say if I would have been better off trying to draft off some one that went through the opening or by just going solo straight to the beach, If I could have hung on to those girls I would have gone were wver they went but since I didn't have a fish in front of me I 'm thinking it was a better choice
What would you do differently?:

draft better from the 2nd bouy to 3rd,, maybe go out harder and get someone in the very front of the wave. it would be really cool if I could train a bunch of ducks that could pull me around with just a small effort on my part. sadly all the ducks are gainfully employed with those corkin Aflac commercials.

I took a few seconds to make sure I got the dirt off my feet since I had decided to go with out socks for the bike.. So I stroll up the hill, take my shortcut to my rack, race belt, sunglasses, helmut...???!!! M&M's are taped all over my top tube, I just started laughing, I was planning on taking some of those sport legs that I just got to see if they helped but figured,,heck it's most like just a sugar pill anyway and ripped open a plain M&M [my favorite} and downed a whole bad with my gel. this would later be know as a bad move.. I decided since I was so close to the exit I would just run in my bike shoes, and as i'm leaving my spot I see another bag taped to my saddle. so that went in the bento box
What would you do differently?:

save the M&M's for later... but it was really funny and made me laugh.. and while that sugary sweetness was great,, revenge shall be sweeter. If I was thinking I would have taken a picture of it with my cell phone

Comments:

I knew Craig had a good swim since he caught me so fast on the bike. I really wish I had a computer though.. I could see my cadence but not speed. I'd be interested in seeing what my high speed was since I was going fast on a couple of downhills. I remember Chris passing me and I stayed behind him a bit but he dropped me like a bad habit on a small hill, I thought I rode well up to the turnaround, Bonny pointed out to me a few weeks ago that I don't spin at all just mash..so I made an effort to spin up the hills on the course and actually did well. I remember Tim's bell, Britney passing me, and Karen, on the road with the chip seal.. it wasn't bad but for some reason i just couldnt' keep my speed up.. It felt like i was pushing with a good effort but just couldnt' go, this is where I wish I had an idea of my speed if I would have seen it really low I would have know whether to push or not.. I'd ask people what their computer was reading and one guy that I was leapfrogging for the longest time would always tell me when I passed him or him me.. Finally we hit a little downhill and I was able to shake my legs out and passed a whole line of people, that momentum kept me going for a while but it started raining harder and the next side road had lots of patch work asphalt so I wasn't comfortable staying in aero since I always seem to be swerving to avoid something.. I lost a lot of time right there as I was getting passed pretty constantly. the last hard left turn I almost went down on, as my back wheel starting sliding out from under me. All of a sudden I was able to get my legs going again, and finished strong, repassed Tim who was really cracking me up with his bell that he kept ringing. saw Aaron and hoped he got a pic of me so I could see my form some (thanks Aaron) I had most likely the best flying dismount I've had since I timed it perfectly.
What would you do differently?:

I need to figure out why or just push through it I'll be going fine at a good pace when all of a sudden my legs just won't spin on the bike, it's like I suddenly lose momentum, my legs are not tired, HR is not high.. they just decide to take a break on me.. then I'll shift way down to really spin some and a couple of minutes later I can go harder again.. weird.

Comments:

best flying dismount I've ever had,, but I did a very slow jog instead of running, and it took me a while to get my socks on for the run
What would you do differently?:

do a wheeelie right into T2 while juggling flaming chainsaws that will show everyone who da man really is.

Comments:

right at that little turnaround my left arch cramped up again,, this was karma payback from drinking and crushing my opponent in texas hold em the night before and while I didn't count the number of step I took it was a good 30 sec break to work out that cramp Right after the 5k turnaround i got into a nice rhythm that I was able to keep for the rest of the run.. somewhere along the way I was photographed with my fairy's of the forest dance this is sure to be on the discovery channel since only film of Bigfoot with the body of Jimmmy Hoffa is more rare. Towards the end someone in a playtri jersey passed me, said hello & knew my name. I picked it up and drafted off her for a while then she pulled away, right about then some other guy was passing us and told her she had someone drafting, since was picking it up anyway, but I stayed on the other guys heels.. I knew if I kept with him I could easily outkick him,, it's one of the few things I do well, not only did I pass him but there are a couple of pics showing my leaving him in the dirt.
What would you do differently?:

watch an infomercial to instantly lose 40 lbs and get lots of speed. I thought this run would be an easy cool down and except for the walk break at the very start and mini turnaround I kept a steady pace
Post race
Warm down:

stood around and caught my breath while looking for Bonny, i didn't see her on the course and wanted to know how her race went. somehow Ashley was there and I got to hear how she did. yup fast again.. Bonny found me and gave me the run down on her race. So I was glad to hear how well she did. then I just hung out ate some food, and watched all the BT'ers clean up for awards.. Everyone that stayed at my place was 3rd or better. the gary house mojo was in high gear.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

eating 2,000 M&M calories a day. not pushing hard enough,, sightseeing on the bike. thinking of how gravity is really a variable force and not a constant, then doing the math in my head to prove it on the bike

Event comments:

except for running out of pizza, which they quickly told me that they were getting more and the slightly disorganized awards everything was great. I'll do this race again..
