Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15 AM. Made my breakfast sandwich (400 calories) and drove over to get Jonny. Ate on the way to the race. Got there around 6:00 AM.

Please note the following: 2 hours and 46 minutes for this Oly... and in 2007 I did an Oly in June in 3 hours and 17 minutes. How's that for doing better?
Event warmup:

Set up my transition and talked to some other BTers. Then got in the water to swim for a little bit. Felt good in the water, not tired at all. So got out and waited for my wave (the last one) to start.
Swim
  • 23m 4s
  • 1500 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started by running into the water. This was a new one on me! Never done that before. I was ready to swim quickly though. I can swim faster than I can walk in water.

Finally got to swimming and I had a line of women in front of me. Not sure why I didn't seat myself in front of them. 95% of the time I place top 3 in my AG on the swim. So, I got caught behind some slow swimmers. I tried to push through them, but they wouldn't move, dang it. All I know is that by accident I grabbed a few butts. Ooopss!

Finally get to the first bouy. It was hard to see where it was the whole time I was swimming. I just followed the crowd.

Then I had to go for the next 2 buoy’s after the right turn. WHERE ARE THE BOUY'S? Not sure. Oh well, follow the crowd. Going this direction it was tough as the waves were head on. Hard to see, hard to breathe. Just hard. I know I have a solid kick though, so I kept kicking and powering through. This is where I started catching up to the men's waves who started 6 and 3 minutes ahead of our wave.

I got to the next yellow buoy, and made another right turn to go back to the beach. Again, I followed the crowd. Although I don't really trust the crowd, because these are all guys and since I caught them, they obviously aren't fast swimmers.

Finally I can see what I think is the exit and I just swim for it. This one guy kept going off course and running into me. HELLO IDIOT! The exit it straight ahead, not to the right. He finally swam out of my way.

As I was getting up to walk up to the beach I saw Jonny in front of me! I had caught him in his wave.

Honestly, when I got of the water, I only saw 2 other girls with pink caps on in front of me. I was mostly surrounded by men from the two previous waves.

What would you do differently?:

I would have gotten in the front of the line for the swim start. Otherwise I had a great swim. I reached my goal of swimming below 2:00 per 100 yards!
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

The run from the beach to the transition was LONG! Really long. I also stopped and made sure my feet were completely rinsed off. I didn't want sand stuck to my feet the rest of the race. I also put on flip flops for running to transition.

Only 2 other people out of 19 had a slower transition than me. So I ranked 17 out of 19 on T1.

Comments:

Really solid bike for me. I wasn't expecting too much going into it, as I rode a hilly 70 miles the day before. My quads were a little sore going into the race, so I was just going to go out there and do what I could do.

Early on I reminded myself that I do a 25 mile, two times a week with my cycling club and I hold a 17-19 mph average on those rides. I kept telling myself I should just do what I do all the time.

The course itself was a little hilly and this is typically where people would die. So many people were really slow on the hills. I was fine on the hills.

Tajsss (BTer) and I played leap frog for a very long time. It wasn't until we hit the chip seal and it started raining did he shake me.

Which reminds me, my average was 20 mph until I hit the chip seal and then the rain hit. Once all of that happened, it dropped to 18 mph (I lapped it on my Garmin). With the rain, I figured better safe than sorry. This wasn't an A race for me and there was no reason for me to risk getting hurt.

I saw a few BTers pass me on the bike portion... DocShock and TexasMPGal. I came up on Gary and passed him. Then we hit a downhill and he flew past me never to be seen again.

I also ran up on Livestrong, and I promptly harrassed him for his balleria form when pedaling. He then asked, "am I doing it now", to which I replied, "yep, still doing it". HA! I think he finally took off and left me too... happily I bet. ;)

Early on in the ride my lower back on the right side was hurting. That always happens to me. Nothing new. It typically works itself out after an hour. Too bad this bike portion was a little over an hour long. So most of my ride was spent with my lower back in pain and me trying to sit up to stretch it.

Overall a really solid bike though.

What would you do differently?:

I wouldn't do anything differently. I did the best I could considering the rain and chip seal. I think I could have been more powerful up the hills, if I had tapered going into this race and hadn't ridden a 70 mile ride the day before. Training for Ironman Kentucky is more important though.
Transition 2
  • 04m 3s
Comments:

HA! If there was an award in my AG for the most PATHETIC T2 time... I would have won it. Seriously. The next highest time was 2:36. Yes, I took a long time but I didn't care. I wanted dry feet and I wanted body glide on them.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster? I really didn't care to move faster though.
Run
  • 1h 03m 20s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

There was a nice cloud cover, so it wasn't miserably hot. Humid, but not too hot. Due to this, just about everyone on the course was running. I rarely saw anyone walking.

I started out planning to do a 5/2 walk/run combo. But I felt pretty good and decided to just run the downhill's and flats and to walk the uphill portions. Worked out great.

My HR was pretty high the whole time, but I made sure to try to control my breathing as to not get a side cramp. I knew I had 6.2 miles to go and blowing it out early wasn't going to do me any good.

The walking portions up the hills helped to keep my HR under control, although I was walking a 11-12 minute mile. So my HR was still pretty high even when I was walking.

I saw Jen (Jah2212) behind me, and then Jonny was behind her. I was pretty sure they would both catch me. Although when I was running, I was running around a 9 minute mile.

Jen finally caught me with roughly 2 miles to go. We ran side by side for a little while then she took off when I started walking. I kept Jonny at bay though.

Overall I had a really solid run! I was shocked at how long I ran and I wasn't completely miserable either.

For comparison, on my Oly last year, I did the 6.2 mile run in 1:17:09 with a 12:26 minute mile.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I'm lucky I ran that much and that fast!
Post race
Warm down:

Warm-down... I stopped and went to stand with other BTers to watch Jonny cross the finish line. Drank some water and ate some pizza. I also got a sweet treat from Tommy's (Zia Cyclist) wife Michelle!

Event comments:

Overall it was a really good race. The location is rather far, but it lends itself to few cars on the course.

The swim course was hard to navigate, but good. A defined swim exit would have been nice. It was kind of hard to tell exactly where the exit was.

The bike course was nice and would have been better minus the chip seal. The portions that were smooth were really nice though!

The run course was really nice in some portions. I liked running through the park under the trees. It had some nice down hills and some up hills. The portion on the road was not good. It was chip seal (I felt through my shoes) and along a busy highway, which was odd. But they did the best they could do with what the had to work with.

Overall a good race. I might go back and do it again next year. I have to say, giving out medals 10 deep in each AG really sold me! I was 10th, so I got a medal! My second one ever. The first one was for my HIM and everyone who finished got a medal there.

I'm proud of what I did out there, considering I didn't have a taper and I did a hard ride the day before. Real confidence booster for my Ironman in roughly 6 weeks time. I felt really strong out there and I felt 100 times better racing, compared to my Oly in 2007. I don't think I hate the distance anymore!
