Swim
Comments: Pretty uneventful, managed to stay mostly on course. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: Pretty good transition, about a 50-yard obstacle course (roots, trees, etc.) to the transition area, decent job grabbing the helmet and the bike, then had to run the length of the transition area to the mount line. Mount and shoes went perfect. What would you do differently?: Get there earlier and find a rack closer to the bike exit. Bike
Comments: Not bad starting off, but something felt a little off. Eventually I noticed my aerobottle was rubbing on the front wheel. Tried unsuccessfully to make adjustments. Then I felt moisture on my legs and feet: the tire had worn a hole in the bottle. Drank what I could before it totally drained. Rest of the ride was mostly uneventful. RD needss to do a better job of explaining the rule as there were several slower riders in the middle of the lane/road. At one point I had to slow down to 17mph as a car that passed me couldn't pass the lady in front as she was in the middle of the lane. Still fastest in AG despite all these challenges. What would you do differently?: I'll have to find a better way to mount the aerobottle on these aerobars (duh!). After I buy a new one, of course. Transition 2
Comments: Perfect rolling dismount, good run with bike to rack, had a little difficulty putting on shoes, but not that much . What would you do differently?: Nothing, this wasn't bad at all. Run
Comments: Angel took my picture coming out of transition, then ran ahead of me to take another. I told her to stop that as she was making me look bad by out-sprinting me. About a half-mile in, Chris from Lake Charles came up alongside of me. I caught Chris loafing at the finish of my last tri and almost out-sprinted him at the finish. He's in the age group above mine, but still a competitor as he's in the evil LC Triathletes, an established tri-club which is our biggest rival in the USAT-SMW Region club competition. Anyway, Chris is a good ol' guy, we talked all the way to the turnaround, then he picked it up strongly and went ahead of me about fifty, seventy-five yards. With about a half mile left, I decided I could finish this thing and started picking it up a little. Surprisingly, I mad up most of the gap on Chris, and got within maybe 20 yards of him and hollered, "Dammit Chris don't make me do this again!" Some of his teammates started egging him on, telling him that the team needed the points. Don't know where I found the strength, but I managed to pass him about ten yards from the finish. What would you do differently?: Eh, I probably underpaced the first three quarters of this, but considering I haven't been able to muster more than 10, 10:30 pace in training, this was a good effort. Good news is I can now swim (62nd overall) as well as I can run (63rd)! Bad news is they both suck. Post race
Warm down: Tried to not puke. Old fat guys shouldn't try to run this fast at the end. What limited your ability to perform faster: Eh, lack of consistent training. Now that I'm able to run regularly, if not often and far, I need to get back on the bike. Last year I averaged a mph faster on the bike and a m/m faster on the run. Event comments: Good bare bones race series. Last updated: 2008-05-17 12:00 AM
