Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5am. I made some cytomax and coffee and ate a bowl of cheerios. My wife and I loaded stuff into the car, and got the kids up. They weren't very happy! The coast was very foggy, but inland where the bike course was had some clearing already. Got to the race plenty early. Kids went for some breakfast while I set up my transition.
Event warmup:

Walked from transition to the swim start to get the lay of the land, and jogged back. Saw the kids again, and got big hugs and cheers from them. Grabbed my wetsuit/goggles/earplugs/cap and headed down the beach.
Swim
  • 23m 39s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Stayed wide and back, wasn't really in a big hurry. First race in the ocean for me, and sighting, salt water in the mouth, current and swell made it interesting. I knock out pretty consistent 2.00-2.15 100's in the pool, so I'd say this time was resonable.
What would you do differently?:

More ocean practice, be a little more aggressive
Transition 1
  • 05m 19s
Comments:

Swim cap was almost off of my head before I finished. (head too big!) I should have kept swimming another 10yds or so, little to deep when I stood. Made it out of the water, and ran up the beach to transition. It was a long way. When to put on sunglasses, and they broke, big bummer.
Had a tub & water to clean feet, dried them and got my socks & bike shoes on pretty well. Could have been better, though.
What would you do differently?:

practice transition a few times.

Course: Beach Run. Soft sand really blows. The wet sand was easy to run on, but the beach was really steep. Runnign across the incline kind of beat me up. Then we had to climb stairs, run through a campground, and then down a ramp. Walked the stairs. Kept hr in a good zone, and had fun.
