Swim
Comments: 1st open water swim, started near back, freestyle for ~100 yds, swam up on someone, tried to go around, sucked in some goose poop and water, lost whatever rythym I had and zig-zagged the backstroke the rest of the way What would you do differently?: learn to swim Transition 1
Comments: tried to drink a cup of water coming into transition, I can't drink and run, jersey got stuck on back What would you do differently?: wear jersey under wetsuit, practice transition Bike
Comments: great bike leg, passed a lot of people (of course, when you swim like me, there's lots of people to pass) got caught in traffic at end of lap 2, almost missed turn off to transition, drank 32 oz water and 20 oz gatorade, spent a lot of time sitting up with a bottle in my mouth What would you do differently?: might ride with a camel pack or get some sort of bar mounted straw thingy, I need water and can't drink on the run, need more hill work, I can spin up long hills fine but can't seem to power over the smaller ones without loosing speed, intervals would probably help too Transition 2
Comments: um, oh yeah, I guess I'll put the bike on the rack, and take off my helmet, maybe put on those running shoes there, yeah, that's what I'm supposed to do, guess I'll get a drink too while I standing here What would you do differently?: maybe practice this one too Run
Comments: first 1/2 mile was bordering on thigh cramping, some dude was pounding out footsteps behind me so I inadvertently keep pushing harder, next 1/2 thighs got better but feet and calves were barking, middle mile had the uphill, kept cadence up and pace moving, felt good, 2 guys got passed me near end of mile 2 on the downhill (knees and shins don't let me bomb down hills), stayed with them and kept pushing pace up, got them both back with strong sprint finish, I think they were 2 and 4 seconds back, would love to know mile splits, they had to be hugely negative What would you do differently?: need to do some tempo work, rarely train faster than 7:30 pace, need to add biking intensity to brick workouts, make that 1st mile easier Post race
Warm down: walked around until I found Kara and Riley, drank some water and gatorade, ate a banana What limited your ability to perform faster: I can't swim, trained to finish not to race, didn't practice transitions Event comments: great first race, performed better than expected, plus there are minutes to be gained if I learn to swim and practice transitions Last updated: 2008-05-19 12:00 AM
