Age Group Rank = 48/51
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition area, body marking, checked out bike/run in and out areas. Gel about 30 minutes before race start.
Event warmup:

Short swim, 15-20 minutes before the race start.
Swim
  • 28m 42s
  • 1408 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim felt good. The pond was shallow in a few spots. They had us swim to the left of the first buoy because it was too shallow to the right. The back half had another spot that was very shallow and I stood up and ran forward until I could get in deeper. I got cut off a few times by people zig zagging which frustrated me.
What would you do differently?:

Have the courage to start in the middle.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

I felt good coming out of the water but was a little unsteady when I was getting out of my suit and into my bike shoes. I took some extra time to get my bearings and get my breathing in check.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 40s
  • 24.9 miles
  • 17.65 mile/hr
Comments:

My heart rate seemed to be up and I worked on getting it down. The ride went well, I'm not very fast, so I got passed by quite a few people. A couple of roads were in pretty rough shape so you had to be alert. I had forgotten to take a Thermotab in T1, but had smartly taped some in a bag to the bike so popped one early in the ride. Two gels during the ride and hydrated often.
Transition 2
  • 03m
Comments:

I missed my rack by one, so took me a few seconds to get in the right spot. Felt pretty good here, got into my running shoes pretty quickly, took a 1/2 table thermotab
Run
  • 1h 12m 43s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 11m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Lost a lot of time here. Pace was not as good as it should have been. I developed some back pain about 3.5 miles in and the area just above both knees started to tighten up on me about 4.5 mile mark. Took water at every mile and had a gel about mile 5 (thought it might help)
Post race
Warm down:

I drank the entire water bottle they handed you at the finish line. Gathered with my family and friends who were there to support me. Two orange slices and 1/2 banana.

Event comments:

This was my second triathlon and first Olympic, so overall I am very pleased with my results. There are minor things I can do differently to improve my time in the future, and I will continue to work on those. I passed a total of 7 people. 3 flat tires, 2 crash victims, and 2 runners with muscle cramps. Maybe next year I'll be able to pass someone that's moving.
