Swim
Comments: Jumped into the water to hold myself against the tow rope--the current was fast, and I actually got a bit scared. Was breathing very rapidly, took a minute to calm down. I was still trying to get calm when the gun went off, there was no 1-minute warning. I floated over the rope and began to swim. I got to the 1200m mark (very well marked signs on the retaining wall) when I got stung in the hand by a jellyfish. WTF?! There was zero mention of jellyfish in the "mandatory pre-race brief". I proceeded to get stung over and over again, at one point getting a nice big bear-hug from a jellyfish whose tenticles wrapped under both underarms. I was in immense pain, and thought I was going to have to quit once I got out of the water. I think the fear of each sting slowed me down, but I exited the water not tired or winded, but definitely burning all over. What would you do differently?: Wear a F#$ING wetsuit!! Transition 1
Comments: T1 was a 400m barefoot run on asphalt from Swim out. I had the joy of having welts all over my body from the jellyfish (hands, tops of feet, underarms, lips), and the girl in front of me jabbed me in the face with her elbow as she was taking off her wetsuit. That at least helped me forget the pain of the jellfish. What would you do differently?: Not much to do in T1. I had thought about going to medical for something for the jellyfish, but decided to power through. Bike
Comments: Really liked the bike course, was straight and fast at the beginning, then after the Bronx bridge it got more rolling hills, and I really flew past people. Love the Zipps! Made it to 40.7mph on one downhill. Again, that bike course was very well suited for me. What would you do differently?: not much, pedal harder, go faster! Transition 2
Comments: quick and easy. Run
Comments: The run across 72nd street was hot, I took it slow, but felt great. Loved the run through Central Park. The hills were tough, but not unbearable. I really felt good on the run, was hot, and could have used some ice, but overall kept going. My mantra was "I feel good, I fee strong" and it was true. Best thing was at the finish shoot I finally saw my friends Maria and Michael, which totally energized me and I sprinted into the finish. What would you do differently?: I missed 10th place by 1:22. I would have run faster, or skipped T2 altogether (haha). Post race
Warm down: Walked all the way back to transition (1 mile), then rode the bike with gear down Broadway "messenger" style.....that was fun! What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat was oppressive, and horrid. I had sweat running down my body before I ever entered the water. But despite all that, the mental attitude and happiness at racing in NYC prevailed, and I had a really great race! Event comments: For a race that costs almost $200, the schwag SUCKS!!! Cotton T-shirt, cotton baseball cap, and nothing for women to buy at the expo. They had nice sports bras with 2007 on them, but nothing for 2008. Very, very disappointing. woke at 3:50, got dressed, had oatmeal and a banana. Didn't get to eat the yogurt. Headed down to the lobby to wait in line for a bus, got to transition in plenty of time to get setup and use the portapotty.
Didn't warmup, as we had a 1mile walk to swim start, and there was no chance for an in-water warmup.
