Swim
Comments: I was just trying to finish it and not be completely used up before the bike & run. This was probably the quickest I've done 250M (yards?) yet, and it was still almost dead last. What would you do differently?: I'd probably swim with about the same effort, but just put in lots more time beforehand. It would be nice to be a little smoother and quicker in the water, but I'm hoping that will come with time. Transition 1
Comments: No fancy flying mount for me. Helmet on, shades on, socks & shoes on, and trotting to the mount line. Standing mount and gradual getting up to speed. Not quick, not pretty, but I just wanted to do it without incident. What would you do differently?: I may practice getting on with the shoes clipped in, but they're not tri-shoes. I'm a bit nervous about the straps getting caught in the chain. We'll see. I also probably will try not to stop and take a drink before getting on the bike. Bike
Comments: At several points, my calves felt like they were going to explode. I must not be using good pedaling technique. Hills & more hills. What would you do differently?: Spent more time in the saddle before the next one. I also need to learn proper pedaling technique, apparently. Transition 2
Comments: Wow, was this not pretty. I almost tumbled coming to a stop, and then again getting into the transition area proper. No incidents racking the bike or taking off the bike stuff, though. Grabbed the cap & belt, and dealt with all of that on the run. This one went better than I thought it would. What would you do differently?: Learn to dismount without looking like a complete dork. Run
Comments: Felt really good on the run. Given the problems with my calves on the bike, I was expecting trouble here. The hills felt pretty draggy, but it felt really good to pass some people. What would you do differently?: As above, more preparation. I also had enough juice left for something like a sprint the last couple hundred meters, so I probably didn't go as hard as I could have prior to that. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Mostly, time doing more training. I'm really just starting. Event comments: First one in the books! Woo hoo! They didn't have chip timing. There were people with timing "boxes" instead. As a result, the transition times aren't split out from the event times. It would have been nice to know the duration of each, but maybe next time. It was awful, and wonderful. I'm already signed up for two more this season, and I think I'm going to like triathlon. Another one reeled in, I guess. Last updated: 2008-05-25 12:00 AM

Croissant and iced coffee for breakfast 2.5 hours beforehand. Usual Gu and Gu20 about 45 minutes before the start.
Very brief and easy 1/2 mile run. Decent bout of stretching, and quite a bit of nervousness.
