Swim
Comments: Water really freaking choppy. All was fine, then came the choppy water & the mouths full of water. Freestyle wasn't working so I tried breast stroke, then I tried back stroke....still not working with the chop. Flipped back over, and looked at what was going on/tried to figure this out. Saw LOTS of people in front of me looking like they were in the same situation. People were literally holding onto the buoys to rest. Lifeguards were right on top of us, encouraging us saying "you're OK, doing fine and it will get better once you round the buoy". The closer to shore I got, the less the chop bothered me. Not enough time to make up for lost time, though. I'm not experienced, but I've never been in a situation where the chop was almost unbearable (for me), and the lifeguards are motivating us, and really on top of who's in trouble. It's just tough to accept that I really struggled a LOT after I felt SO ready & had prepared myself for an uneventful swim. And, it crossed my mind in the midst of this swim...."WTF am I doing out here, no more of these damn triathlons." Right now I'm feeling differently as I've got unfinished business to take care of in regards to the swim. I'm giving my swim a below average because I did what I could with the conditions. What would you do differently?: Learn to swim with the chop. Seriously, I just need to do front crawl, and TRY to swim with the chop... no stopping & looking around, just worry about myself. I think panic set in while gasping for air in the deep water, which resulted in me not knowing what to do with myself. Transition 1
Comments: Wetsuit strippers are AWESOME!!! Just glad my shorts were tied tight so the crowd didn't get an unexpected show. What would you do differently?: Nothing...decent T1. Bike
Comments: NO FLAT TIRES THIS YEAR :)!!! MY FIRST TIME HITTING OVER 17mph IN A RACE :)!!! Just have to get out of my comfort zone. Tried to make up for a very bad swim, and see what I could do and if I would have any legs left for the run. I was pushing hard, but not super hard. I tried my best & that's all I can say. What would you do differently?: Magically be granted bike speed ;) Transition 2
Comments: Only issue was my race belt wasn't snapping like it's suppose to. What would you do differently?: Hurry up, I guess. Run
Comments: This is the longest 1.5 miles out of my life, just as it was 2 yrs ago. I gave it my all, so it is what it is. Bloody shoe as result of becoming a bit too comfortable with the sport, and not practicing sockless much. What would you do differently?: More speed work in training Post race
Warm down: Ate, talked with family, the cold towels at the finish were wonderful. Then back to my aunt & uncle's for the annual lunch they have for the family who comes to support me....I had a fan club of 13 this year :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of bike speed, and mainly my swim issues. In defense of myself, I heard a lot of "gotta make up for that damn swim" on the bike course, and saw a lot of people struggling as I was. I was mentally & physically prepared (minus the chop) so this is really hard to accept. I'm not ready to take this as my best performace....looking into tris coming up to prove to myself I can swim better than this. Event comments: Can't say it enough, Door County Tri is the BEST around....you have to do it to understand how every single little detail is planned out. Such organization, and it really is a great race. Only bad thing is the water tends to be unpredictable, but race organizers can't do anything about that. Last updated: 2008-05-25 12:00 AM

No family members were willing to take on the challenge this year, just me.Wonderful pasta dinner at my aunt & uncle's Sat night (yes, I'm spoiled), & spent time with my fan club who was sleeping overnight too. Race morning I had PB toast, water, and then I was off to Murphy Park. I was more excited than nervous at this point. Got everything situated, briefly talked with Pam(thanks for saying "hi", Pam....I never would have known you outside of BT), got the wetsuit on, and waited.
I think this is the first race where I actually warmed up....I was swimming around, getting used to the water. The plan was that I would be more calm during the swim. That plan kicked me right back in the ass, though. I talked with my fan club a bit, and then it was time to race.
