Swim
Comments: Didn't realize I had as good of a swim as I did. I had some directional issues as always (pulling to the right) that put me off course a bit. As a result, I thought I had a worse swim than I did. What would you do differently?: I need to use a wider pull on my right side so I can maintain my line. Transition 1
Comments: Worse transition ever. First, the zipper on the speed suit was stuck on the run from the water to the bike. So I probably wasn't moving as fast I I should, but I did get it. Worse part was my socks. I dried my feet quickly but for some reason, my socks felt like they were lined with fly paper and I couldn't get them on my feet. As a result, I lost 40 seconds in transition, the difference b/w 2nd and 3rd AG. What would you do differently?: No Socks. Bike
Comments: Held back on bike to try to save for the run. Had an impossible time of getting heart rate down to the high Z3. I aero tucked the large downhills with great success, but I should have hammered harder on the slight downhills. What would you do differently?: Hammer harder on the slight downhills and go on RPE instead of HR Transition 2
Comments: Sure beat T1. Run
Comments: It was hot as heck. I was breathing really hard the whole race but I was trying to keep a good pace throughout. At about mile 2.5, I was passed by another AGer. When I asked him to slow down so I could be ahead of him (I thought it was polite of me), he said he wasn't a sprinter and I would catch him at the end. Certainly the gap narrowed toward the end, but I too am not a sprinter, so he finished 9 seconds ahead. Oh well, I gave it my all. I did take a small squirt bottle of concentrated Gu water and that did give me the lift for some of the smaller uphills towards the end. What would you do differently?: Not sure except find the secret, hidden reserve to kick the last .25 mile. Post race
Warm down: Water, banana, Sports Rub and good chit chat. What limited your ability to perform faster: I am turning 41, not 21. Event comments: I enjoyed the race although it is really out of the way to get too (probably why it is lightly attended). I was happy to see that I could maintain a good run pace (although it makes me realize that I could have drastically cut my FL70.3 time if I had remembered my pace watch). Pretty well organized (they left the Heed so they can't get a top rating for organized), however, it is a long way from Atlanta and they did a good job of getting a lot done in a relatively remote place. Drove the bike course the night before.
Stayed in the "oh-so-chic" Econolodge of Elberton, woke up and had oatmeal and a diet coke.
Lots of stretching, quick run, and a quick swim to get myself all warmed up
