Pre-race routine:

Slept surprisingly well for camping and it being kind of cold. Woke up at 5 am to eat a bagel and peanut butter. Headed over to the race start and got a primo rack position.
Event warmup:

I actually did a warm up for this race, mostly because I had so much time and I was getting cold. Jogged around for maybe 10 minutes with a couple quick bursts, then rode bike around to make sure shifting and breaking were working okay.

Comments:

Really happy with this swim, 3/8 AG. I did less breaststroking to sight and catch my breath than in any other race, pretty much just swam at a good pace the whole time. I spent lots of time working my wetsuit up over my shoulders, and didn't get the tired shoulders I get sometimes.
What would you do differently?:

Not much! Could always try to swim straighter but I did okay with that. I maybe went a little too hard, since I was a little dizzy and tired after getting out of the water, but I was able to shake it off pretty quickly and felt okay getting on the bike.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

4/8 in AG. I increased my kicking towards the end of the swim, and I think that helped me be less dizzy, but I was still a little wobbly and tired getting out of the water and couldn't run up to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to not be so tired getting out of the water.

Comments:

Last in AG on this. I really did have fun on this bike course, and I haven't been having fun on the bike lately so that was a good thing. But I got passed a ton, and looking at the results it's really frustrating that I was so slow. I'm pretty sure the dude on the mountain bike with fat knobby tires beat my time. :-/ I did fine descending on all the downhills, but got passed way too much on the flats and slight ascents.

What would you do differently?:

Taper? I don't know why I'm so slow lately. I'm biking more than I ever have before but I'm also slower then ever, so I think I need to change something in my training. I was pushing about as hard as I thought I could without blowing up on the run, but maybe I can push harder.

Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

Handed my bike off to the bike catcher, grabbed my Garmin, and got the bag from the volunteer with my run stuff. Got shoes on and out on the run pretty quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Yankz. Keep speed up higher through the parking lot instead of slowing down so early.
Run
  • 1h 05m 57s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 10m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I got out of transition and couldn't figure out why I couldn't get my Forerunner to snap into the wristband. I fiddled with it for a couple minutes until I looked closer and realized the pin that it hooks in on was gone, so I just shoved it in the back pocket of my tri top. So I didn't have any HR or pacing information for this, but it's getting easier for me to go by RPE. Looking at HR data I do think I pushed this well, but my pace was just slower than normal.
What would you do differently?:

Again I think being in the middle of increased training volume, especially running, made me slower and I was kind of expecting that for this race. I'll taper for my race in August and see if that helps matters, but it might just be that marathon training is bad for my speed...
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank water, stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I guess the trite answer is being so slow? I don't know exactly why that is, I think a proper taper would help, and some better recovery from the higher training volumes I've been doing lately. I have some ideas for improving my training too so we'll see how things go for the next race.

Event comments:

Good small local race. The point to point bike ride thing could be a pain but they handled it really smoothly.
