Pre-race routine:

Left the house a little after 5:00 and was there by 6:05, which gave me plenty of time to get set up, check in, etc.
Event warmup:

The only objective I had for this race was to make it through the swim. I put the wetsuit on and did three or four 30-40 meter out and backs. The buoys looked like they were about 10 miles apart and I was thinking, "no way". Ran into Amy Mutz and she was as encouraging as ever. Shelly and Brooke went to the race with me and they were super encouraging too. I didn't tell them what I was thinking, just that I would give it a go and decided if I was going to do it once the race got started.
Swim
  • 14m 35s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

I made it. I waited until ever last person was in the water and on their way, then I got in and just started stroking. Out to the first buoy I was surprisingly straight with just one or two peeks to see if I was heading in the right direction. Since I kept my head down and just swam I was actually surprised when I got to the turn. Making it there was a huge mental hurdle. The second length was the longest and I applied the same mental strategy - just swim and look up every now and then. I zig zagged a little more on this leg of the swim, but I was flat out elated when I got to the second buoy and was making the turn for the beach. I was all over the place on the last leg because I was so pumped that I was going to make I started swimming much faster. Swimming faster just sent me off in the wrong direction faster, but I didn't care at all. I was as elated as if I had won the World Series with a HR in the bottom of the 9th inning when I hit that beach. Shelly and Brooke were right there and it was just a great moment. I had begun to worry that this new found OWS phobia was going to derail everything and when I came out of that little lake, it was all good again. Just cool.
What would you do differently?:

Not even going there for this race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

I had a bit of a struggle with the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

As time goes by I'll practice this and get better at it.
Bike
  • 55m 34s
  • 17.2 miles
  • 18.57 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm pleased with this bike effort. It was the right pace for a sprint race, a beautiful ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

This was a little disorganized. I tried down a GU while I was in there and I should have had it with me on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Keep my nutrition with me.
Run
  • 26m 40s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

I did not run like this was sprint race. I'm not sure I had a sprint in me.
What would you do differently?:

I suppose that you learn how to manage your bike such that you can truly run when you finish.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched, walked around, nothing in particular.

Event comments:

This was a fantastic local race. Lots of volunteers, so much food prepared by a local church that I'm sure it was not all eaten. I'll do this race again.

The bike leg was actually 17.2 instead of 16.1.
Wind: Some
Course: A beatiful course that was very fast for the first 8 miles or so. Pavement was great, no traffic. This race will become known for "Pray Hill", the steepest hill I've ever attempted on a bike. I think it was at mile 12 or so. I could have made it to the top but my left cleat popped out of the pedal about 45 yards from the top and there was no way I could get back on and start riding. It was that steep. My distance riding paid dividends here because I passed quite a few people the last 5 miles or so.

I don't think this was quite 3.1 miles.
