Pre-race routine:

This race was probably the lesson for everything NOT to do. I went to Disneyland the day before and walked around for a couple of hours, didn't eat well, and left after the park closed at midnight. Didn't get back to my place until about 1:30am in the morning, and then woke up again at 4:30am for less than 3 hours of sleep. Dragged myself out of bed, gathered up my things, had some cereal for breakfast, then drove down to Long Beach. There was a lot of traffic on the 710, but eventually found some street parking near the start/finish area.
Event warmup:

Strapped on my heart rate monitor, ran the 2-3 minutes to the starting area to try and get warmed up, stretched a bit while waiting in line for the port-a-potty, then ate some Sport Beans. Worked my way over to the starting corral.

Comments:

Umm, my IT Band really started hurting around mile 7 or so. I had to stop running at mile 8 and went to a medical tent, but all they had was ibuprofen. I took 2 of them, but it didn't help much. I ended up walking the rest of the way. I was on pace to set a PR and felt really strong too... :( It was no fun walking and seeing all these people pass me. I refused to quit and get a DNF. I had run it fast enough up to that point that I still ended up with a fairly respectable finish time, but it was still disappointing. I can barely walk today... time to see a physical therapist and really recover from this... I may have to withdraw from my marathon which is in less than 40 days. :(
What would you do differently?:

Sleep more and eat better the night before. And not get injured.
Post race
Warm down:

I hobbled back to my car like a gimp, then drove to meet up some friends for lunch at Lucille's. That was the positive from the day - getting to eat some great BBQ in Long Beach. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury. And probably sleep and nutrition too.

Event comments:

I liked this race a lot. Not a huge field, but plenty of volunteers and lots of supporters. Will definitely considering running the full marathon some time in the future.
