Swim
Comments: When I signed up, I put a little aggressive time for me but it turned out to be perfect. I think I could have even pushed it a little harder. I felt good throughout. The tips from the Master's Class helped. I was passed by two guys but only at the beginning of the last lap. My goal was to pass one person. I didn't, but again I felt good about my seeding. What would you do differently?: Take my gel on time. Be more aggressive in such a short distance race. I need to go all out for a 300 meter swim. Transition 1
Comments: I ran the whole way from the swim finish to my bike. I never do that! Yahoo! I walked over dirt (no choice) and put my socks on. Yuck. Grabbed my helmet and glasses, smiled at my dad for a picture :), put my glasses on, and headed for the bike exit. Hey- where's the exit?! My glasses were so fogged up, I couldn't see in front of me! What would you do differently?: Check glasses for fogging. Try to go sockless for a sprint distance race. I don't have tri shoes so that would help but I'm not in the market to spend money on those right now. We'll see in the future. Bike
Comments: I couldn't see due to fogging of the glasses so I just took them off for the first 400 yeards or so. I also didn't test my bike to make sure my wheels were lined up and lo and behold, my computer sensor was hitting the wheel so I had to stop and fix it. I wanted to push it a bit and did but not to the max. I was pleased with my time. I ate one gel and drank from one water bottle with Electrolyte powder. I only used one packet but for this distance, but I think it was okay. What would you do differently?: Do two packets of Electrolyte powder- the right amount. Check my bike right after I put my wheel on to make sure there is no rubbing. I'd also push it a bit more. I know I can go faster. That too will come with time. Transition 2
Comments: My socks were still wet from the swim. My transition time was good, but my feet were squishy in both pair of shoes. I forgot my race belt in Round Rock so I borrowed some elastic from my mom's sewing box and made one. I actually liked it more than my race belt. It was much more narrow and I could tie it to whatever size I needed. It also kept my number straighter than a belt and was less constrictive. What would you do differently?: Change socks? Maybe try running and/or biking with no socks? Run
Comments: The machine was just not as fast as it could have been. I walked a lot and I felt hotter than expected. My feet, beleive it or not, were STILL sore from Thursday (chopping vegetables in bare feet on tile floor for about 3 hours). I also developed a blister on my second toe on my right foot. That was probably because of the wet socks. My middle back got tight during the first half and just stayed that way until the end. Nothing new but it sure is getting more frustrating. I've come to really appreciate my run workouts though knowing I will get faster soon. I can't wait for cooler weather to really see what I can do with running. What would you do differently?: Just keep training, just keep training, just keep training.... Post race
Warm down: I stretched a lot afterwards- legs, back, arms, everything. I passed on the pizza and beer but took 3-4 orange slices and more water. I was actually craving them when I saw someone with them right at the end. Maybe that was my issue today- not enough sugar? I did forget my gel, but still... What limited your ability to perform faster: I think for the first time all year, I was a little dehydrated and under caloried (if that's a word). The orages at the end made me think I was. I didn't realize it until the middle of the run. I know I don't have issues with it, so I'll just chalk it up as too much good food and drinks with my family the night before? Event comments: I liked this race. It was a good one to push and see how I'd done thus far. It made me also realize that I am definately not out there to win. I don't compare myself to others like I used to. I guess I'm just not as competetive as I used to be- a blessing? Maybe that's because I know where my limits are more these days. I'm out to have more fun and be there for others while staying in shape. Don't get me wrong, I still want to do well, but I'll be the judge of where that is, thank you! Got up at 4:10 for a 6:30 race start. Pretty darn early! Ate oatmeal and had coffee at 4:30 and left the hosue by 5. We were at my parents house and my dad volunteered to go down with us to take photos. What a guy! Both my parents have always been so supportative of my brother and I growing up. Pretty cool...
Swam about a 200 to get the blood moving. I had to wait about 40 minutes to start (seeded #136 out of about 400) so I had a while before I started. Luckily, there was a side pool to do warm up #2. I forgot to take my typical gel right before the swim start so I was a little hungry at 7:10am (when I finally started- 10 second seeds). More on that later.
