Swim
Comments: The water was choppy with a very strong current. If that sounds bad it wasn't. The current was going with us so we all had a really fast swim. I felt as if I did a great job sighting and swam smart and straight. The only problem is I'm still really slow. I got into a nice rythym of breathing every stroke to my left. That kept me very calm and helped to sight well but I'm sure it slowed me down. I do not want to be a 50th percentile swimmer! What would you do differently?: Get better form and breath every third stroke like I practice. Swim at Walden more. Transition 1
Comments: This transition went better than the time shows. After running through the shoot we had a bit more beach to navigate and then a long run on the sidewalk past the entire transition area. We then came into transition from the back side. Wetsuit came off quickly, shoes went on well, shades, then helmet and I was off. I ran with my bike to the mount line and got into the clips quickly and was up to speed pretty quick. What would you do differently?: Beyond getting fancy (shoes on bike) nothing. Bike
Comments: I rode pretty well but still have a long way to go. I still get passed by my age group more than I'd like. I did a better job with the hills and pulled with my clips more than last time. The overall rank includes transitions. I just need to ride more and get stronger. I should be better than this. Transition 2
Comments: This went pretty quickly too. Everything went smoothly. What would you do differently?: Learn to run without socks. This would save me almost a half minute. Run
Comments: Didn't meet my goal of a sub 24 minute run. The first half of the run was slightly up hill into a very strong headwind. The second half was much faster. I just didn't have it today. I ran well but could never really get moving. I know I can run better. What would you do differently?: Suck it up and push harder. Post race
Warm down: Found friends and family and encouraged other racers. Made an effort to thank volunteers. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall I had a good race. Even without the super fast swim aided by the current I would have beat my goal of 1:10. I'm inching closer to higher finishes in my age group too. What limited me? Experience and training. It's my second race so I'm still getting fit and learning. Gotta keep training! I especially need to ride more! Event comments: Fantastic race, always very well organized and tons of great volunteers. There isn't much for post race activities but I'll take the great race over a great party. A bunch of family and friends were down at our cape house this weekend. A nice completely sober pre-race evening was tough but I pretty much did it. I had two beers and hung out with everyone until about 10 and went to bed. I really just sat there replaying the race over and over in my head. But, I got to sleep early enough for my 4:45 alarm clock.
Drove down to Falmouth and due to complaints from neighbors we all had to park about 3/4 of a mile from the beach. My dad came down with me because he likes to revisit the days of watching his boys playing baseball/football/etc. So, we walked down to the beach together. My uncle came too so they were able to walk around and keep busy while waiting for the race to start. It was good to have them there. Just about race time my brother and wife made it. They were part of the late partying group that I had to fight myself away from so this was REAL early for them. I really appreciate all the support.
