Run
Comments: Went out feeling like I was going slow and everyone in my wave was pulling away from me. Settled in and started passing people. HR was upper zone 3/low zone 4 through the first 2 miles. Ended up doing sub-7's which is flying for me. HR started going into zone 5 the last part into transition. I tried to back it off some, but not enough to get the HR back down What would you do differently?: Take it a wee bit slower on the leg as a whole. Transition 1
Comments: Felt slightly disjointed but moved in the direction of getting onto the bike. Ended up with the fastest T1 in the Clydes. Bike
Comments: I took it easy on the out bound. I got passed so much in the first couple of miles. I figured I had a stronger 1st run and that accounted for some of it. Then as time went on, I was figuring the folks around me were going to be surprised when they turned around. I think I passed everyone back who passed me after the 3rd mile. I just took it steady going out and let the HR drop down some. After the turn around I was going into the wind and maybe working a little harder than I should have been. I spent a lot of the time early in zone 4/5. Then I started to let it come down. Later I was going by highline wires and it interferred with the HR monitor. I leap frogged with the same guy that I did at Barkin' Dog. Finally I passed him for good right at the end. I came out of transition pretty close to him to. Bike is where I lost over 3 minutes to the Clydes overall winner. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a little more on the way out and a little less on the way back into the wind. I need to get some climbing in and have some more intense bike time. Transition 2
Comments: Again I didn't feel smooth in this. I had left a long sleeve shirt on for the ride since I was so chilled in the warm up. I took the time to take it off here before the last run. I almost grabbed a cycling shoe instead of a running shoe as I was putting my shoes on.. What would you do differently?: Go slower to go faster. Run
Comments: I didn't have it for this run. I got going ok, but then I just wanted to quit, to walk, to who knows what. Dime passed me out on the first lap and less than 1/4 mile later Dillard passed me. I was feeling like crud about that time. Mark was encouraging and it helped. I tried to be what he said and I got around to the aid station. Walked through the aid station and drank a cup of water. It almost seemed like that water didn't settle well. After that I was just done. I rolled into the Ironman shuffle. I think I slowed, but I was making forward progress and I didn't feel like I was walking. You know, that shuffle doesn't work to well on a rolling (washboard) dirt path :) I persevered through this run and that is about all I can say about it. On the other hand, a month ago, I would have been very happy with this time for the second run. Looking at many of the other's time, people slowing over a minute was rather common today. What would you do differently?: Mostly everything alluded to earlier. I didn't have it to go after some of the people ahead of me. Post race
Warm down: Hooked up with Kevin and Kim and ran out for a 1/2 mile or so and then turned around. Interesting similarities to some of the events of the spring. What limited your ability to perform faster: I don't have any speed work. Lack of top end endurance. Not pushing the bike or having the wrong plan. Event comments: Racing Underground does a good job and provides a good value. Overall, I feel much better about this race today than I did as I finished it yesterday. Mostly packed up Friday night. Got up at 4:40 and made a smoothie and got myself ready to leave the house. A few bathroom stops later, I was out the door. Got to the venue a little after 6:00 and got a good rack spot. Checked in and ran into Markdill38. Talked with him a bit and went about milling around til I was ready to go out for a ride.
A bit after 7:00, I went out for a warm up ride and run through the gears. Really didn't feel strong. Turned around after 10 minutes going out and found out there was a decent and chilly wind out of the east. Made my way back in over 12. Noted that for later. Got back to my rack and someone set up there transition area in my spot, spent some time rearranging. I was mildly peeved about this. I get there at 6 to get my spot and someone who comes over an hour later snakes it.
Listened to the pre-race briefing, got in line for the port-o-let and then didn't have time for the run I wanted. Also, I really felt poorly. Something I wasn't going to say out loud, but thought it. Didn't have time to fight the lines and still make the start time.
