Age Group Rank = 27/474
Pre-race routine:

Got up and had a coffee and prepared my breakfast to go, peanut butter on whole wheat bread, coconut drink, banana. Took a cab to the race start and got my gear set up. Bike was in place from the night before. I had a spot right against the fence which was a little further from the exit/entry path but allowed me to spread my gear nicely. I shared my gear set up area with some nasty biting ants, I don't think they were very pleased.
Event warmup:

Nothing really walked to the swim start which is a little over a mile but nothing else.
Swim
  • 28m 1s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had a little bit of an anxiety attack, partly because of the water temp. But it was tiny and I got it under control.
What would you do differently?:

I was banking on the current and wanted to relax a little but I should have swam much harder to at least get a 26 minute swim time
Transition 1
  • 03m 55s
Comments:

The transition is really long, I made a very smart move, as soon as I got my arms out of the suit I stopped and got the rest of the suit off and then ran to my bike. I think this is a must for this course or any long transition as this really prevents you from overheating and makes you a lot faster. A lot of the PRO's don't even use a suit but hey I guess we need some help.....
What would you do differently?:

I struggled a little bit with my helmet strap, the Giro Advantage II has these earflaps and it can be a little difficult to put on.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 50s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.66 mile/hr
Comments:

This is a nice bike course and I really enjoyed it. I would not say that I hammered it as I wanted to save something for the run, especially seeing it was a hot day and I must say I really felt good starting my run.
What would you do differently?:

Take some oil to lay down for my drafting friends......
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Better then last year - I really have to see if I can run without running socks, save some seconds perhaps
Run
  • 48m 25s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot Hot Hot, anyone who knows me knows that I really don't like running in the heat.... I used about 2 cups of water at every station to try to cool down. Otherwise I felt good and a lot better then in Stamford.
What would you do differently?:

Give me a cold swim over a hot run any day.
Post race
Warm down:

Loads of cold towels, nothing really just walked around then met the family and then jogged back to the transition are +- 1.5M to get my stuff and rode home.

I also had a lovely sprint from the security check at the airport to gate 99 at Newark trying to make my flight. I was amazed at my speed and perhaps I could use my casual sneakers as racing flats :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and my weight which I think has gotten a little out of control lately.

Event comments:

This is really a great race, NYC, the course and the organizers are excellent. The organizers are extremely friendly have a great website and are very responsive.

Course: straight down river past all the jelly fish, last year I did the swim in under 18 minutes this year it took me 28 minutes as there was no current at all. Last year the guys on the kayaks had to paddle to stay in place this year nothing....... Obviously the earlier starters had more of a current as you can see by my overall rank. I actually think I was swimming against the current, well perhaps slightly

168 / 179 average for the whole event, whoops seems a little high
Wind: Some
Course: The initial part (getting out of transition) is a climb but if you are in the right gear no problem. We had a tailwind going out, which was good as it is a bit more uphill. The course is crowded but as long as you keep your eyes open and advise people that you are coming you are fine. On the way back a couple of guys kept drafting which I found extremely irritating. One guy was from the SBR team. He was a crafty little bugger and managed to sit on my wheel for approx 20 minutes. I know who you are ;)

Course: first mile and a bit is a bit of an uphill, then you turn into Central Park and then run the course with all the hills, arghh the heat..... the hills are fine as I train on them but anyone out of town should ride the run course just to make sure they know what's coming.
