Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:15. DH got up with me and pumped up my tires and loaded my bike. What a honey. Usual morning stuff. No poptarts in the house:( Had a banana nut muffin and water on the ride to Lake Geneva. Gorgeous sunrise with big puffy pink clouds and silver linings:) Met Trainergirlmick at Wally World in LG and off to the race we went. Picked up chips and set up transition. Had about 25 minutes to close so made out way to the John's and then back to transition one last time to see if we could find PJGrande. Found her, looking for us. Nice to meet up and hang until the beginning of the race. Stuck our toes in the big drink. Got out of the way for the first wave.
Event warmup:

Putting my wetsuit on was warmup enough!!

Comments:

The return portion was pretty shallow but deep enough for a full scoop when free stylin'. Looked like we were going to get dumped on with the ominous clouds above. Lucked out there. I guess some of the Oly talent saw lightening on their swim. Scarey stuff. I can safely cross off the sub 2 minute/100 goal I have set for myself. Yipee.
What would you do differently?:

Hmmm, get goggles that don't leak or have a lesson on how to wear them correctly. I felt good with my stroke and didn't really need my legs for much. Was reminded by one of the lifeguards to stay on course as I was drifting a little too much toward them. And I thought the theory was that the waves would push you into shore. Oh yeah, found myself on the wrong side of the bouy once. Quickly rectified though.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

I had to sit down to put my shoes on. My feet were all full of wet grass and mud. Therefore, my darn shoes must have had a bunch of mud in them cuz I couldn't clip in right away. Took me a good 20 yards to get them in. Started uphill and it was okay. Made sure I was in an easy gear. Felt good on the bike. I kept playing cat and mouse with a woman in my wave and then finally took off ahead of her. Met a newbie towards the end of the course and she said she was keeping her eye on me for the whole thing. Well, isn't that a nice compliment. I saw her at the finish and gave her a high five.
What would you do differently?:

Bike faster:) Gotta use them there darn aero's.

Comments:

I felt great on the bike. Tried to make sure nobody from my wave would pass. I caught more people on this race that I have in any other I think. I will have to look at my rank for that portion and figure it out. It seemed I did well at least:) Finally broke my slow 15 mph speed. I can cross that one off my goals too.
What would you do differently?:

Bike faster. Must get a good feeling for the aero bars. That would help tremendously.
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Of course my feet were numb. I guess I should get some Yank so I don't have to tie my running shoes. Clint said I should putz so much with putting my hat on. Just put it on while I am running out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Don't lallygag.
Run
  • 27m
  • 3.11 miles

Comments:

I can't believe how good I felt on the run. I was passing people left and right. Just kept tracking down those #12 calves. It was hot and humid amidst the trees, but it brought back memories of the old cross country days. Fun, definately fun.
What would you do differently?:

Train to run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of water and walking. Happy to see my honey and the kids at the finish line. They showed up in time to see me come in off the bike, so they also had the chance to see me take off for the run. I love my family, they are the best. All three kids had smiles on their faces. Nice to see. Took a walk with Pam to get some eats and check times. They weren't all posted yet. Eventually found out that I won the Athena division. Waited until the very end of the awards ceremony to receive my hardware, but to no avail. They forgot to announce the Clydes and the Athenas. Pam the trooper went up to the podium at least three times to ask what was up...."we are getting to that" was their response. Thanks to Pam for sticking around and waiting with me. The two of us whooped and hollered for me:) Woot woot. Pam won her division. Go Donkey!!

Event comments:

I loved the course, but the vitals at the end were a bit lacking and the awards ceremony was way disorganized. They announcer completely forgot an entire age division and they didn't even acknowledge the Clyde's or the Athenas. No mile markers for the bike and at least one intersection on the bike course didn't have volunteers. Thank goodness there were no cars so I didn't have to stop at the sign.
