Lake Mills Triathlon
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 33m 17s
Overall Rank = 453/
Age Group = Female Novice
Age Group Rank = 16/70
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30 AM, oatmeal and banana, water. First triathlon, so wanted plenty of time to get oriented. Arrived at Lake Mills around 5:45 AM. Set up transition area with other female novices--nice to be with others in the same boat!
Event warmup:

Got in the lake with wetsuit to let body acclimate to cold water.
Swim
  • 09m 50s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

I've never swam in open water, so this was a first. Had planned on breathing every fourth stroke, but ended up breathing every two. Not very good at sighting--had to breaststroke every so often to figure out where I was going. I was bumped and bumped others, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be (I was really nervous about this leg of the race!).
What would you do differently?:

Practice sighting, try to get in open water!
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

Yikes, getting the wetsuit off was hard. Then had to lace up and velcro bike shoes--took forever.
What would you do differently?:

Get clipless pedals and bike shoes.
Bike
  • 53m 2s
  • 15 miles
  • 16.97 mile/hr
Comments:

I don't have a road bike, so I put smooth tires on my mountain bike which helped a lot (compared to having regular mountain bike tires).
What would you do differently?:

Had no idea distance or time--that would have been nice to know during the ride. Also, I want to get clipless pedals and shoes! Maybe a road bike in the future, if I really get into triathlons.
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

I went to the wrong rack at first, so that threw me off.
What would you do differently?:

Get bungy laces to get shoes on faster.
Run
  • 25m 14s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

I grabbed a cup of water on my way out, tried to drink it while running and ended up gagging and choking it out. Also hit the wall at mile 2--realized I hadn't eaten ANYTHING at all since 4:30 AM. Took out the goo and tried to get some down, also gagging a bit on it (this was my first time trying goo). Walked with a cup of water at the second station, did not gag this time.
What would you do differently?:

Walk while drinking, eat more, use goo before I felt like I was going to pass out.
Post race
Event comments:

This was my first triathlon and I had a blast. It felt great to finish and see my two daughters and husband at the finish line.
