Pre-race routine:

Went to bed at 9:00 and woke up at 1:00 3:00 and 5:00. got up, took shower and shaved. Thought about RSTOCKS IMKY R/R where he was debating to shave his chest or not, so I plucked my 2 chest hairs. Ate some yogurt with water and drove 2 miles 2 race site. Wife and son showed up before race started, and i talked to them.
Event warmup:

Walked to truck 3 times to get towel, bike shoes, and goggles
Swim
  • 09m 46s
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

I knew this was going to be bad but jumped in with a good attitude and just did the best I could. side stroked some, but never stopped or walked. This is about 5 min. faster than when I started swimming, so not too upset.
I received payback from when my 24 yo son played baseball and football. He was at the end of the pool and was yelling at me too hurry up, keep my head down, and was telling me I was catching my wifes boss and to HTFU in a nice way. (he would have competed but he didn't get off until 8:00 am)
What would you do differently?:

just keep swimming more
Transition 1
  • 04m 12s
Comments:

knew this was going to be slow since it was my first time, so took time and made sure I had everything I needed.
What would you do differently?:

Just what I did today but know how to make it faster now
Bike
  • 55m 7s
  • 15.2 miles
  • 16.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Just started spinning to get heart rate down after swim. Was planning on getting into big ring, but was not sure how legs would hold up on run, so stayed in small ring and kept spinning. The county decided to put chip seal down on Thursday over about 2 miles of the road that had to be traveled over both ways. This made me be a little more cautious.
All my training rides had averaged about 15 mph, so this was a pleasant surprise. Passed more people than passed me.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

My bike rack was 1st rack after dismount, so this worked out real good. Being over 50 and fat I sat on curb to put shoes on. (DID NOT USE BUCKET)
What would you do differently?:

Be born more coordinated so I wouldn't have to sit down to put shoes on
Run
  • 37m 35s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out running a good pace and heart rate was where I wanted it. Chins started hurting for the first time in 8 months. walked for 2 mins and then started a 6 min walk 2 min run the remainder of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Could have run mare than I did
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged wife and son at finish line. Watched the other competitors come in and talked to whoever would listen to me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Didn't run as much as I was capable of. First tri and a great learning experience.

Event comments:

First tri. so nothing to rate it with.
I will be back next May, better prepared
