Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30, two pieces of bread w/ peanut butter. Drove 1/2 hour to Boulder Res and met up with a friend who was also racing.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 25m 42s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

Second time doing open water swim. It felt good. I didn't try to get to the front of the wave; just started in the back and worked my way forward when I could. The sun made it kind of difficult to see the first bouy, so I got off track a few times. I set a personal goal of under 27 min for the swim, so I was very happy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 08m 29s
Comments:

My friend and I decided that we would do the race together, so I waited in the transition area for him to finish his swim.
Bike
  • 1h 31m 9s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 17.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Old Stage was difficult, but not nearly as hard as I remember when I tried a practice run about a month ago. The rest of the race was just a good time. Not terribly difficult, but I didn't push myself either.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. Drink more.
Transition 2
  • 02m 53s
Comments:

Again, my friend and I tried to stay together, so even though we finished the bike at the same time, I waited while he hit the port-a-john.
Run
  • 1h 15m 21s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

I hit the wall here big time. I've never been a runner, but I didn't think that I would do this poorly. A stand alone 10k I can usually finish in 56 min, so I thought that finishing in under 1:05 would be a good possibility. I felt good starting off the run, but quickly realized that I didn't drink enough during the bike. I was so hot that I stupidly would dump the water I got at the aid stations over my head to cool off rather than drinking it. Probably by this point it was too late anyway. I made it to about mile four and then had nothing left. I walked/jogged the final two miles and became more and more disgusted with myself with each step.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more, train more in the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Jump into Boulder Res and swam out to the docks. This was the best part of the day as the cool water was exactly what I needed.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Dehydration, run training

Event comments:

Very disappointed as this was the first tri that I had registered for and was intended to be my first tri ever. After four months of somewhat regular training, I was hoping to do better.
