Pre-race routine:

Had a bagel and cliff bar as usual before races.
Event warmup:

Steep hill to get to T1.
Swim
  • 46m
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

First open water swim at this distance. Clean crisp fresh water - makes a welcome change from the Hudson!! The swim overall was not too fast, but did feel comfortable. I suppose it was because I took my sweet time. My average in a pool is 1m55secs (compared to 2m10sec). I also failed to keep find good toes to draft off... However, this was my first long swim. Happy to finish.
What would you do differently?:

Put more effort in. Took it way too easy.
Transition 1
  • 07m 42s
Comments:

This was a "Clean" transition. We had to put everything in bags. Again - I took my time drying off. Also, because of the cold water I left my tri top on the bike, so I can start with a dry one. All took time.
What would you do differently?:

Keep top on. Move faster.
Bike
  • 3h 12m 21s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Legs on the bike did burn, but could have pushed harder. Hydrated v. well on the bike - had to stop and pee 3 times. There weren't enough portaloos unfortunately.
What would you do differently?:

Would push harder. Legs still appeared good after the bike.
Transition 2
  • 04m 9s
Comments:

Slow T2. Could easily save 2 mins here.
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn to dismount bike with shoes still clipped on.
Run
  • 2h 16m 46s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Run hurt. Course was great though. Found pacing much harder that on previously run half-marathons. People in the half-iron are generally much fitter and faster, and pulled me along.

First lap ran faster than I should, and second lap really hurt.
What would you do differently?:

better pacing.
Post race
Warm down:

No real warmdown. Walked around a bit. Had a beer and some food. Could not eat any solids for about 1 hr - stomach seemed to have shut down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am pleased with the overall result - this is my first half-iron distance. To go faster, the shld put more effort in the swim, and on the bike. I don't think I can shave off much from the run.

Event comments:

This is my first half, so I don't have much to compare against. Not enough portaloos on the bike course. Else all seemed good.
