Comments:

This was my second mass triathlon swim start. The start area was small, allowing for about 10 swimmers per line. I started back in the pack, figured I'd let the others fight it out for the first 200 meters or so. I was surprised how slow going it was at first, I expected something faster, but it was a traffic jam. Overall I'm happy with the swim, but I'm still not very comfortable in my wetsuit. I had some panic attacks, but was able to settle down before the first turn.
What would you do differently?:

Start more towards the front and spring away from the others, avoiding the human washer machine effect. More time/practice in the wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 03m 40s
Comments:

The run from the rez to the transition was long and the pavement hurt my feet, therefore I walked. I got to my location, quickly peeled of the remainder of my wetsuit and naturally it got stuck around the ankles, hung up on the timing chip.
What would you do differently?:

Tuck the timing chip under my wetsuit, get someone to carry me on the pavement/get some flip flops or suck it up on the pavement.
Bike
  • 58m 59s
  • 17 miles
  • 17.29 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike felt good. Out of the res is gradual uphill for about 5 miles. Nothing steep, just a pain in the ass. By the time I got to Neva Road I was flying, 25 to 26 mph, feeling really good. About this time my lower back started to hurt a bit, not sure how much that affected the total ride, but definitely noticable.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

No issues here, felt pretty quick considering my shoes have a ratchet buckle and velcro straps to negotiate and pulling my gloves off.
Run
  • 33m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

I just didn't have it today. Mentally I wasn't prepared to fight back the urge to walk. Running is my weakest event and I just didn't have the will to keep running today. Disappointing.
What would you do differently?:

Increase mental toughness.
Post race
