Age Group Rank = 26/28
Pre-race routine:

Eat light and pray
Event warmup:

Stretch
Swim
  • 13m 22s
  • 5001 meters
  • 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

I started off shallow and ended up swimming through seaweed only 4 inches below the surface. That totally freaked me out- and with the swallowing of water, etc I ended up doing the breaststroke most of the rest of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Start in the back of the pack and pace myself. This was by far the most disappointing part of my first ever tri. I am a strong swimmer generally, but this open water swim made a mockery of me.

I can't wait to do another one to recoup from my bad experience.
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

I had rubber banded my left shoe onto the back axle, but still could not seem to get my feet in. It took about 20 seconds I think.
What would you do differently?:

Practice feet into shoes over and over.
Bike
  • 48m 31s
  • 20 kms
  • 24.73 km/hr
Comments:

I thought I did OK- but I got passed by MANY people. I never passed anyone the whole trip! It was a bit of a psychological downer- but I just paced myself and didn't push too hard.
What would you do differently?:

Do more spinning in the winter and practice longer rides.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

I was delirious and can't hardly remember T2. I was beginning to get totally exhausted.
Run
  • 48m 7s
  • 5 kms
  • 09m 37s  min/km
Comments:

Hardest part of the race generally. I walked about 80% of the "run" course. This is the biggest area of improvement that I could see.
What would you do differently?:

Run
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around and drink fluids

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weighing 278 pounds

Event comments:

The swampy land bridge on the far end of the run course was not good. Maybe they could add gravel or something to make it less slippery. Also 46th St. was in bad shape for the bike portion.

Other than that I LOVED the race and it was a great first time experience and I will do it again!
