Pre-race routine:

First race ever! Woke up at 3am to leave DC by 4am. I hate feeling rushed and being late, but it was crazy early. I didn't feel tired, but excited and anticipatory. Ate a regular breakfast of egg and cheese on wholegrain wrap. Drank a bit of water. I got there by 5:15am, including a 7-11 stop for bottled water and a gas fill up at the cheap(er) gas in the countryside.
Event warmup:

Light stretching before the swim start
Swim
  • 08m 20s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Feet first entry, push off bottom, swim smooth, with long strokes. The lap counter wasn't very good, didn't drop the red marker on my last lap, so I looked up at the wall and she said "last lap" out loud, which wouldn't have been helpful if I hadn't lifted my head.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 58s
Comments:

When I saw this time, I didn't think I took this long, but I realized I did walk my bike from transition to the mount area. I could have run. I was way wetter than I though I would be, so my socks got soaked anyway.
What would you do differently?:

run with bike out of transition
Bike
  • 1h 01m 30s
  • 14 miles
  • 13.66 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal on this ride was to NOT get off my bike and walk any of the hills, and I accomplished this. It is obvious that I need to ride more hills, and DC doesn't have them. I would also like to work on speed and using my higher gears to my advantage. I think I just need to log more time on my bike in general.
What would you do differently?:

train more hills
Transition 2
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

Quick, even though I drank a little too much water/gatorade, so I felt a bit sloshy on my way out onto the run.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a bit less
Run
  • 38m 56s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I did my best, but the hills were definitely challenging. I walked twice for about 1 minute each time to get my HR down. Even when I got off the bike, I knew I would finish the race and felt great about that, even with the uphill run ahead of me. I loved that all the other racers cheered each other along.
What would you do differently?:

Now that I can run 3-4 miles, I want to work more on speed. I would like to consistently run 3x per week.
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged my mom! walked over to the water/snack table.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had no clue about how to pace myself, so now I have an idea of how hard to push in the beginning of the run. But overall, the goal of this race was to complete it.

Event comments:

My main goal was to finish, which I obviously did! My secondary goal was to complete in under 2 hours, which I also accomplished.

It really was a great day! I plan to do more races this summer.

Course: off road terrain for first 1/2 mile? It was generally pleasant as I got the wobblies out of my legs. Then huge hill that just kept going until the turn around. Back downhill and then small uphill at the driveway to the finish.
