Swim
Comments: Started good but when you get to the shallow part and have to walk, it messes up your rhythm. But with the water being so cold, it allows you to catch your breath. The first few swimmers were on their 2nd lap when I started, so I did my best to stay out of their way, but I got kicked a few times. What would you do differently?: Practice more in open water that is cold. It's hard to get used to being so out of air after a minute or so in the water. Transition 1
Comments: It was still raining at this point so T1 was a little tough. Since I decided against the wetsuit, my time was reasonable but could be better. I think the rain slowed a lot of people down though. What would you do differently?: Sit down initially instead of trying to do everything standing up. Bike
Comments: I thought I was riding at a good pace, but I finished towards the bottom of my age group. The rain wasn't much of a factor, but the roads were a little wet so you had to be cautious in the turns and going downhill. What would you do differently?: Not let so many people pass me. It was mostly the duathletes, but it starts to wear on you emotionally when 10-20 of them pass you. Transition 2
Comments: easy in easy out. What would you do differently?: had a small energy bar to fuel up for the run. I didn't have much adrenaline left by this point so I lacked that extra kick the last 2 miles of the run course. Run
Comments: Flat and easy run. I missed the 3 mile marker so I wasn't sure how much further I had to go. I was shooting for 1:30:00 and missed it by a little over a minute, so I was disappointed. I didn't have that extra kick I normally get towards the end of a run. Looking back I'm not sure where I could've made up that extra minute, but I felt good about the race nonetheless. What would you do differently?: Would have liked to have the I-pod for the run. It helps a ton when you're tired and ready to give up. Post race
Warm down: water, water and more water. I passed on the pizza since it was 8am. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think it was not being able to have an I-pod. It helps with your candence on the bike and run. Plus it helps you concentrate on something other than your fatigue, especially during the run. The I-pod was sorely missed, but I'm not sure it would have been worth the 2 minute penalty. Event comments: I'd race here again since it's close and a relatively flat course. I think the improvements could have been the swimming facility and the post race menu. Pizza is great but not at 8am. Last updated: 2008-06-17 12:00 AM

Shower, protein shake, protein bar and apple.
Set up transition and stretched. Swam about 5 minutes to determine if I needed a wetsuit. The water was cold but it I didn't think it would be worth wearing the wetsuit since it was only a 400m swim.
