Swim
Comments: The swim went really well. I spent a lot of time worrying about the swim and whether I would make it or not and as it turned, out it was the best leg I had. The only downside I had was at the turnaround it got very congested at the bouy and was a slugfest and then it spaced bck out again. What would you do differently?: Not a thing. Everything went really and I was very happy with the swim. Transition 1
Comments: nothing What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: The course was, in my opinion not a rolling course. The hills were relentless and never stopped. I trained as much as I could on likewise terrain, but there really isn't anything like it around my area. The ride was going great, and the course wasn't giving me any issues until about mile 44-50 when I started to get some light leg cramps. I backed off and started to get in a lot of NUUN and water to get my electrolytes and hydration back up. After they leveled back out the ride went really well. What would you do differently?: I think I need to get a better bike fit, than what my bike store gave me. I started to get, and still have some numbness on my left hand. My back was also cramping up on the ride. But all in all, I was right on for the average mph that I was shooting for. Transition 2
Comments: I took a few minutes to get changed from riding clothes to my running clothes. I then reapplied sunscreen to my upper body to get coverage on parts that were previously unexposed. Run
Comments: The bike course had sapped a lot of strength out of my legs, and I walked the first mile to let my legs recover a little. After that I was able to run the first 10 miles at an 8 minute run- 2 minute walk pace. After that, I started to get a little light-headed and I had to walk to get my nutrition/hydration back under contol. I am glad that I still had my senses to catch this early, because if I didn't, I would have eventually been in the back of an ambulance with an IV in my arm. It took at least four miles of walking to get right. I threw out the idea of finishing under 14 hours and just wanted to finish at this point. By the time I started to get hydration under control, my lower legs and feet started to hurt. I had a huge blister on the ball of my left foot (Read- need to change socks at special needs station), and I will probably lose 4 toenails from blood blisters. On the plus side of walking, I met some really nice people while walking. I met some Ironman veterans that said that this had been the hardest Ironman that they had ever done. I never really was able to start running again due to my feet, BUT I was able to put the pain aside and run the finishing chute. That area from the applause and cheers was awesome and made the pain go away completely for about 5 minutes. What would you do differently?: Do a lot more long runs and work on a better running plan than 8:2. The 8:2 doesn't work well when the walk isn't at an aid station. Post race
Warm down: Walk from the finishing chute to the Kentucky Civic Center for a baked potato and rice. What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat and foot injuries. Event comments: A great race, that you really have to prepare well for. I did A LOT of heat acclimation for and I still had issues. Last updated: 2008-06-17 12:00 AM

We got into Louisville on Friday afternoon after a short trip from Memphis, with an overnight stop in Bowling Green, Ky. We arrived at the same time as about 500 other athletes did, so check in at the Galt House was insane. The elevators were constantly filled to capacity in both directions. We finally made it up to the room and settled in. Saturday morning I got a chance to meet some of the other BT members at the swim practice. (It was a pleasure to meet you all!!) Saturday afternoon, we checked in my bike and gear bags at the transition area. The volunteers were great, I met a volunteer named Juan that was an ultra runner. He gave me some pointers on staying cool.
The only warm-up you get for this race is the .75 mile walk from transition to the swims start. But the 2 hour wait in line negates that warm up.
