Pre-race routine:

Drove all over the backroads of northcentral Montana to get to this race. I had to attend a farm tour in Big Sandy the day before for work. We decided to take a shortcut for the 230 mile drive down to Rapelje and ended up driving about 150 miles on gravel roads with the windows down because we have no air conditioning. Everything in the car, all our gear, including my hair and our lungs was covered in about an inch of dust and dirt. But it was a beautiful drive. Drove over the Big Snowy mountains and along the Missouri for a while. Arrived at Rapelje Friday night and quickly set up camp to get in out of the bugs. The number one worst part of this race was the mosquitoes.
Event warmup:

I was designated as the person to go first on our team of 5 women. This included a Le Mans start at 11:00am. It was HOT! Ate a hammer gel, drank lots of water and had Derm do a quick tune on my bike.

Comments:

Lap 1 11:00 am: LeMans start run to bike. It was really really hot out and the course did not have a single speck of shade. The first lap was kind of brutal. Mainly because of the heat I think and the course was super bumpy. I ran over lots of prickly pears and worried about flatting, but never did. There were 3 memorable climbs and one technical rocky section. I never made the rocky section. Missed the first climb on this lap. 1:21

Lap 2 6:00pm: It finally started cooling off and the course was packed in some and not as bumpy. I felt great on this lap. Josh went out and rode this lap just for fun but got a head start and I never caught him so we didn't really get to ride together. I made all the climbs on this lap. 1:21

Lap 3 1:20am: Night riding. The temperature was perfect and the moon was bright. I didn't see a single person the whole time I was out, but did see a bunny. This was only my second time night riding, but I felt more comfortable than last time. Took this lap pretty easy. Walked the last two climbs. 1:38

Lap 4 9:00am: Final lap. I was pretty fatigued by this time and my butt was not happy to sit through another hour of bumpy riding, but I made it. Missed the first climb but made the last two. 1:23
What would you do differently?:

More bug spray!!!
Post race
Warm down:

They had a trailer with showers. Took a cold shower and felt like a brand new person. Josh and I had lunch at the Zydeco Cafe in Bozeman and then sat in Renova hot springs on the Jefferson River on the way home. The river's high enough that cold water's flowing into the hot pot making a nice cool/warm pool. A huge bull snake slithered by and we decided to get out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat.

Event comments:

This was a really hot dusty bumpy ride. My arms and ass took a pretty brutal beating. Also I was nearly eaten alive by mosquitoes. Not kidding, there's probably 50 mosquito bites on my butt where I was bit through my bike shorts.

Overall, though, especially looking back, this was a fun ride. My team was great and I was glad to log close to 60 miles. Night riding is always fun. Not sure I'd do this one again though. I like the trails closer to home better.
