Swim
Comments: I was more nervous about this part of the race than anything else. I mean, they do write on your body so that they can identify you if you drown and all. Plus, I'm not that comfortable swimming. I'm inefficient, awkward, etc. All that being said, this was surprisingly easy. I was nervous and claustrophobic, but the distance was so short that by the time I started feeling comfortable it was time to get out of the water. What would you do differently?: I ended up doing the breast stroke most of the race. I wish that I would have freestyled more but I was too nervous. I couldn't focus and kept thinking that I was going to get off course. Oh, and I'd like not to be one of the last people out of the water in the future! I was number 57 out of 61 :( Transition 1
Comments: This transition worked smoothly. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Biking felt good. I started off feeling really tight and sloppy but found my stride around mile 3. I focused so much on the bike to run transition that I wasn't expecting the swim to bike transition to be tough too! What would you do differently?: I raced on a mountain bike that I added slicks too. My tires are about twice the size of road bike tires. I feel like I did OK, but I definitely won't do a distance longer than a sprint on a mountain bike. I think it added at least 10 minutes to my time. Transition 2
Comments: I wore the same shoes for biking and running so this transition was smooth. I threw on a hat and race shirt and took off ... in the wrong direction! I lost a few seconds turning around. What would you do differently?: Run in the right direction! Run
Comments: This run was hard. I was tired and wobbly. I practiced this transition several times before the race, but I don't think I was as prepared as I needed to be. I didn't find my stride until mile 2 or so. What would you do differently?: Practice the full bike/run mileage before the race. Post race
Warm down: Nothing really. Picked up my race shirt and walked a mile to the transition area to get my gear. Ate fried chicken biscuits with gravy for breakfast ... I think I'm a little sick from all the fat and grease! What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. I feel like I did OK, but I have a lot of room for improvement in all 3 categories. My goal was to finish and get this first race under my belt but for future races I'd like to be closer to the middle of the pack and not so close to the bottom of my age group. Event comments: This was a good first race. Challenging and friendly. I like the t-shirt and medal! Last updated: 2008-06-18 12:00 AM

Spaghetti dinner the night before. I tried to relax all day but tossed and turned all night and barely got any sleep.
Hopped out of bed, ate a Luna bar, yogurt, AND a banana. Drove to the race site to pick up my packet. After the transition set-up I stretched, said hello to Amy and Beth, and sat in the water (practiced my stroke), and then stood at the swim start.
