Swim
Comments: Very chaotic swim. The swim corral was a zoo. Music was blasting to the point where you could not hear the waves being called out. I worked up my way to the front to hear plus I wanted to be toward the front for the start of my wave. The boat ramp getting into the swim was not very wide and I am sure people lost time because of this. The first part of the swim went great and then very quickly our wave hit the slow swimmers from previous waves. Wow! I have never seen people in such survival mode. It was pretty hard to get around people that really have so much difficulty swimming. I didn't want to swim over them so I ended up stopping several times to look up to find a way around. This was pretty frustrating but I guess I have to learn to get around people better. At one point I saw a bunch of women standing up and walking. I though that was pretty weird. I swam past them. The exit on the boat ramp was a complete log jam when I got to it. You literally had to doggy paddle to get out. That too was frustrating. Oh by the way, did I mention the water was literally poop brown? They said it was only food dye... What would you do differently?: Learn how to navigate around slower swimmers more efficiently and quickly. Transition 1
Comments: Pretty long jog back to T1 but it was good to get the legs going after the swim. What would you do differently?: I need to find areas to drop time here. My husband says I should ditch my cycling gloves. I'll probably get some of those speed lace thingys for my running shoes as well. Bike
Comments: This was the most fun of the three disciplines. Felt really good on the bike. Was in the big chain ring the entire time. The only people that passed me were on time trial type bikes (mine is just a road bike Giant TCR 0). Lots of people to pass which was a little dodgy in places. It would have been nice if at the course talk they explained that slower riders need to stay to the right. There were people on comfort bikes and mountain bikes going 10 mph all the way to the left. A had to pass several times inbetween people on the right even though I yelled on on your left. I was a fun ride all in all. Avg speed 18.4 mph. What would you do differently?: Push a little harder. Transition 2
Comments: Not much interesting here. Had to change shoes, ditch gloves, helmet, etc. What would you do differently?: Maybe not ride with gloves and get speed lace thingys Run
Comments: I can't run very well. I am definately working on it. Seeing all the people passing me was pretty frustrating considering how well I was doing on the swim and bike. As I approached the finish line two girls in my age group passed me. That stunk... This was the first time that I ran a mile under 10 minutes so I'll take that as a little victory! The run itself was OK. The part through california adventures was fun. Looking at all the stuff kind of kept your mind off the run. The distance was supposed to be 2.5 miles and I was conserving for the last 1/2 mile where I planned to really pick it up. I passed a man who yelled out, "Keep going, only 1/4 mile left!". I thought I had about a mile left... So right there I picked up my pace but it wasn't enoungh. Oh well - next time! What would you do differently?: Not conserve so much! Post race
Warm down: Walking around and stretching What limited your ability to perform faster: Not knowing when to conserve and go for it! Event comments: More porta potties needed! Would've liked the distances a little longer and maybe some more hills thrown in there. I understand they have done this in the past at Bonelli Park in San Dimas. I did a triathlon there the week before and really liked the course better than this one. It would be very cool if the run could actually be in disneyland and not california adventures. Overall Rank = 261/1337
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 53/180
Slept for about 3 1/2 hours... Got up at 3:40, showered and ate my pre-race breakfast consisting of oatmeal, peanut butter on toast and hot green tea. After arriving at the transition area got everything set up.
Put on wetsuit and did a nice barefoot jog up and down the very large transition area to get heartrate going. Did some stretches as well.
