Swim
Comments: my worst swim ever. well, nyc tri 2005 was a bad swim. this wasn't a bad swim per se. what sucked is that my goggles were filling w water from the moment my face went into the water. i stopped probably for a good total of maybe 5 minutes overall adjusting them, removing them, emptying water, reorienting myself. argh! i'm so pissed about this!! and yet, i still think i was out of the water at 14/31 when i should have been in the top 5-10 out of the water. anyway, live and learn and move on. What would you do differently?: NOT PUT SUNBLOCK ON MY FACE/NEAR MY GOGGLE LINE! I'm giving this overall swim a below average only because the swim itself was fine - i felt good and did fine, but the goggle/water issue, i'm so pissed about. Transition 1
Comments: I futzed around in here a little longer than usual. i couldn't find my sunglasses. luckily it was a cloudy, overcast day and i really didn't need them. otherwise, being close to the fence i could have taken jeff's had a needed them. so i wasted probably a good 1-2 minutes tearing all my shit out of my bag looking for them. oh yeah, then i was also trying to get my gloves on - decided to wear gloves so i could use them to wipe my nose and i was putting them on as i started on the bike course. What would you do differently?: not leave my sunglasses in the back of the car. Bike
Comments: i feel that the time i have spent working on my biking has paid off nicely. i definitely did better on this ride, which i would say is comparable to the west side highway ride of the nyc tri and 3 year later, my time is better. and i was in better shape then. it was a great day in that there was little wind in either direction, it was cloudy and cool but not cold. so it was easy to get momentum on the downhill in both directions to take you up the next hill. What would you do differently?: nothing. just keep working at it to get faster. def my fastest avg pace ever in a race (i think). actually, i should probably eat more. i only at a couple bites of a clif bar. Transition 2
Comments: i ate a clif shot and drank some water here. What would you do differently?: nothing. Run
Comments: i started out slow and for the most part felt ok. i stopped to drink water in almost all of the water stations. i was concerned about the run overall, but i think i overcame it mentally. i walked one other time. had to adjust my speedlaces twice as my sneakers felt too tight. i really thought i was going to have a very slow, like 11 min or slower run. in fact looking at my watch i thought i was. i really think i just got into a zone and kept going. i didn't see all the mile markers which helps. i saw the 1st and thought ugh. then i saw mile 3 and thought, ok, now you are more than halfway done. easy peasy. keep it up. then this girl and this guy were talking behind me as they got closer to me, and i heard him say thanks for getting me thru mile 4, then he took off and before i knew it, we had 1.5 miles to go. at which point it is just the length of the zuma parking lot and you can see the tents in the distance. that is a blessing and a curse at once. i wouldn't let myself walk at all this last half mile and pushed myself thru it. i finished strong and feel good about it. What would you do differently?: run in my speedlaces a little more to make sure they feel ok. more/better/smarter run training i.e. tempo runs and HILLS just to get me stronger/faster. Post race
Warm down: water. fruit. crackers and cookies. didn't stretch til i got home. What limited your ability to perform faster: WATER IN MY FUCKING GOGGLES! And forgetting to pack my sunglasses and wasting time looking for them even tho i really didn't need them. Event comments: I have never done the Malibu "classic" as it is now known. this was the first Oly they've done since the sprint/classic sold out so fast. i'm really glad i did it. I haven't done an Oly since 2005, which was a shitty race for me a mere 2 weeks after my HIM. This race I did better. My swim was sucky for reasons not pertaining to my ability to swim but due to my stupid decision of putting sunblock on my face...sigh... my bike split was better for sure which i am happy about. my biking more has certainly paid off. my run, surprisingly was just as fast as it was in 2005, however it really wasn't great timewise because this was a totally flat course whereas the nyc tri is hilly central park. so...timewise, i was on par. but really, i need to spend more time running. i am glad i did the race. felt good overall. a little tired afterwards but nothing out of the ordinary.
